Ive had a ticking coming from the drivers side head on my 74 302 for awhile now and finally found where its coming from. The problem is i dont know what the culprit is. I started it up with the valve cover off and watched. It took quite awhile for the 3rd valve from the front to start oiling. I pressed down on the rocker arm and it almost choked the truck down. The ticking isn't nearly as loud now but its still there. Now awhile back i changed that valve because the lash cap had broken off of the old valve. I put all new lifters and pushrods. Any suggestion to help me figure this out would be appreciated.
But a bad spring wouldn't make the valve move around, would it? If the guide is good, it should hold the valve steady. Is it possible for the seal to still seal when the guide is loose? Are you sure the valve itself is moving?
I had the same problem on a 351m once ended up getting new guides installed in the head. The guide is what keeps the valve steady. How does it compare to the rest?
Yeah thats what i believe is the problem too. I plan on taking it off and having it worked on tommorow if it will stop raining long enough to take it off.
UPDATE........... I got my heads back from the shop yesterday and put them on today. The ticking is gone. Needed a guide like before mentioned and all 8 seats. They hit me for a pretty penny but im glad its finally gone. Thanks to everyone for their input.
