Exclamation Squealing Front Brakes....

So Dearest Hubby (DH) has been super busy lately. I knew my van was needing some work on the brakes, so I just tried to only drive to the store and back and coast to red lights as much as possible. So today DH has a day off work, so he busted out his wrenches and got under the wheelwell of the Aero. You won't believe what he found.....I *HAD* to post a pic..... here it is--my front driver's side rotor and pad....

Or rather what is LEFT of it!!!! HOLEY SHEEP!!!

That would explain a LOT of the thumping, bumping, and grinding noise that has been coming from my front end.... DISCLAIMER!! I only drive 10K a YEAR--IF THAT-- with my Aero!!! How in the h*ll can the rotor get THAT BAD in 4 years!?!?!?! (4 years since last brake job) AND DH has seen the brakes since then doing the CV 1/2 shaft R&R, and other repairs, so it is not as if we just "didn't notice"!!!

I've seen other cases like this......ususally in the dealership display case marked "Wall Of Shame".

Wow.wee cowgirl, that is one nasty looking rotor. Good thing you found it before something bad happened to DH or you. Thanks for posting the pix. Makes me shudder just looking at it.

96_4wdr--DUDE!!! You have to warn people!!! Ewwwww.... and must have been some NASTY infection to have to take the hoof wall off!!! YUCK!! That hoof will take probably a good year to grow back.... how's the horse?

aerocolorado--yea, I feel like a dumb@$$ seeing that rotor that way... I thought *maybe* the shoes were on rivets or something like that but I *NEVER* imagined anything like this!!!

The flip side of the rotor was "normal wear", and the shoes still had pleanty of pad on them. So I told DH something is WRONG... My money is on the caliper.... and sure enough, when he tried to compress the piston back it was not straight. So DH tried taping it with a hammer....and well, it started to fall apart!! So now I have NEW pads, NEW rotor, AND a new caliper on the drivers side!!! All shiney and new.... makes me tear up to see it so prurdy..... now DH is working on passenger side..... I shudder to think what he might find....

Sure you didn't have slotted rotors? If not, you do now.

But seriously, that is wacked. I am wondering if your calipar is toast too.

And 96, that pic is horrible. poor horse.

It sounds like your caliper was using the phenolic piston, which is known to get damaged by heat, as in from too much hard braking. If you use your brakes hard, it can get used up in short mileage. I would also check the other caliper to see if it isn't also sticking. And replace the wheel bearings as well. (I forgot, was this a 4wd van?)

I don't know if you get much choice in this, but when you get new calipers, try to get those with the steel cups. At least those won't disintegrate when the pads are overheated.

The other piece of esoterica here is the wheel bearings; a lot of the new ones use plastic cages to keep the ***** or needles in place. Again, they can be damaged from over heating, which leads to catastrophic failures.

Granted, if you overheat bearings or brake parts, you probably should replace them anyway, but you would like those parts to not disintegrate on you before you get to them.

93nighthawk--you must have been posting the same time I was editing my post to add my thoughts on the issue.

xlt4wdr90--I will have to look at the old caliper piston. All I know is when it comes to braking, I coast up to red lights unlike DH who is almost still accelerating till the last minute. I HATE wasting gas accelerating towards a known stop, especially in a gas guzzler like my Aero. So this really has me . DH rarely drives the Aero, unless he needs to haul stuff, or I need to borrow his car so he drives mine. But like I said, I don't think I even put 10K a year on the Aero, so .... And yes it is 4WD. Do you have siggy's turned off?? I have my Aero listed in my siggy

But at least the passenger side was fine. All it needed was new pads, so DH had it R&Red in 15 minutes. He is getting pretty good fixing the Aero, much to his disappointment...

shoot that cripple Aero and get a horse CG

just a pic off the internet, haven't owned a hay burner in years.
lots of neglected yuppy pets here. good grass hay $400 a ton. something has to starve when the yuppies can't afford their status symbols.

hoof rot is a widespread disease here with the wet weather, mud soils and yuppies that know nothing about horse flesh and the love of a good ride

I WISH I had a horse!! Mine got old (28, 29, and 35 respectively) and died. Haven't been able to afford to pay to feed a new one. I cannot BELIEVE the price of hay!!! My horsey friend calls it "Green Gold"--and that is BEFORE it goes into the horse!!

We've had a super wet spring here this year, so I'm sure the horses have pleanty of foot fungus issues this year. Yea, I've run into a few people who own horses who have NO business owning horses. "Oh! They need water EVERY day!?!?! Can't they just eat snow??" DUMB@$$es..... *sigh*.... Oh well, I guess that is why I'm around, to try to some sense into these people that I meet.....

That's a good one about "when I die..." You have that written into your will???

Well, DH took Aero for a drive last night. Still some thud/thumping, and noise coming from the front. He pulled and wiggled (or tried to) on all of the tie rods, etc. while the wheel was off. But other than a bit of play from the inner tie rod, everything seemed tight. So DH is figuring he's going to have to do the wheel bearing and ball joints in the near future..... never ending repairs....

Since you have a 4wd van, it's more difficult to see the front wheel bearings. But with brake abuse like that, I worry about other parts being damaged, check to see if they have any kind of play in them.

(And, somehow, I missed your sig when I saw the picture of the hamburger hoof that 96' posted.)
