Losing oil- is this normal?

My '98 5.4L Expy with 114K is using about 1/2 quart per 1000 mi.

I bought it used with 92K 2 years ago and didn't use it much until recently when I noticed it during trips between Fla and Tenn. The car is in great shape; I got 17.86mpg with a/c off and cruise control set to 65 so I'm pretty sure the engine is solid.
I've had techs check for leaks and there seems to be none so I'm wondering if this is just normal for this engine.

Thanks in advance

I'd say it's just fine for an engine of that age. Just keep an eye on the oil level and don't let it get below the "add" mark.

Check or replace your PCV valve if you haven't....I recall that sometimes a bad PCV valve will increase oil consumption a bit, and it sure is an easy fix.

In the "old days" when buying a used car, I would feel blessed if a car only used one quart in 1000 miles.

My now sold 97 with the 5.4 would use 1/2 qt every 3000mi and I was running 5W30 M1 and my 01 with the 5.4 is about the same with 5W20 M1, so sounds a little excessive to me. What oil are you running

According to Ford, the normal oil consumption for a new 5.4 is 1 quart every 5K miles. You're using 2-1/2 quarts evey 5K miles. Yes this could be better, but right now you're okay, it's nothing to lose sleep over.

What kind of oil are you using? Regular oil or synthetic, and what weight, 5W-30 or something else?

I apologize to everyone for not responding sooner. Dealing with some problems.

I'm using 5-30W which is the recommended oil per the manual I have. I change every 3K or less and use Pennzoil or equal.

Ive had complete service done on the engine, new COP's; new upper/lower ball joints; new Bilsteins all way round; tranny service; the car is taken care of and according to Carfax the only previous owner took care of it too. From what I've read it's not serious but I should andwill keep an eye on things.

Thanks again everyone, trshman

My 97 has 200k miles on it and has used 1 qt every 1000 miles ever since I've owned it. It runs great and doesn't smoke. Keep oil in it and have fun...
