What inline six's interchange?

I've got a 64 F100 SWB with the 223 six 3spd. I'm in the middle of a tear down right now.

The checklist includes: Volare clip, four link and air bags in th rear (already notched the frame 8"), finish shaving the trim, finish filling all body seams, finish straightening body, and only use LEAD. All in Primer by June. Sounds reasonable to me!

My only issue is, the old six is tired. I don't want to do a motor swap until I have the volare clip installed. And due to lack of $$$ I can't build up and throw in the 327 I've been lusting after. SO I've decided to atleast find a good running six to swap in until the winter where I'll continue with a new powerplant upgrade.

My question: Besides the stock 223, are there any other engines that are interchangable WITHOUT having to swap my tranny or driveline?

Thanks!
I'll post pictures soon!

Im not sure about the swap...but I would guess the 262 6 would swap...exhaust between the two as I recall is different...I wanna say a 300 would go as well which would be an easy find...or a 240 even...on the latter 2 Im not sure as far as the exhaust goes...one of the early 6s has the intake and exhaust on the same side, and one has exhaust on one side and intake on the other...
As for the trim...email me ...I am very interested in the trim plus whatever else you decide to not use on it...Im on the west side of the mountains...how about you ???

Your enge mounts to the frame just behind the radiator. The engine then bolts to the transmission which has a cross member that supports the rear of the engine. My 66 has a 300 6 but it has the typical side engine mounts. I believe you would have to find a engine from pre 65 that bolts up the same to do a straight swap. Might want to just drive your tired engine until you get ready to do the swap, or you will may have to do the fab work twice. They do sell an engine crossmember and trans mount that bolt or weld in. If you plan to throw a x-brand in I'm not sure if the crossmember is available, but it may be.

You are stuck with a 223 if you want a direct swap.

wrong its mywifestruck,

215, 223, and 262 will all work.

240, 300, and the falcon sixes are not compatable. They will require an engine swap.

It's shame, cause the 300 I-6 is one awesome engine. One of the best ford ever built.

So 215, 223, or 265? I'll keep my eyes out. I considered even hopping up a 300 just to keep it all six stuff. Thanks!

The 215 was the forerunner of the 223, and was only used in 1952/53.

The 223 was used in cars and trucks from 1954 thru 1964.

The 262 was only available in trucks 1961/64.

There are two different 223 cylinder heads.

The head used 1954 thru 1959 has two studs in the center front/rear where the valve cover attaches.

1960/64, the valve cover bolts to the head in eight locations. This is the head you want, because...

The early 215's and 223's (thru 1959) had a problem with oil getting up to the valve train.

It was common once to see ads in Motor Trend and etc for "top oilers" for these early engines to eliminate the CLACK CLACK CLACK.

300 in a '62 w/ a t-98....... Not sure exactly where the stuff came from, a big slick or a 4x4 but here are some pics.. The z-bar bracket is fabbed but everything else seems to be ford.....

PS.. have also heard of people using a FE transdapt tube mount

Smile

I had a 64 that came stock with a 262, and I direct swapped a 223 when the larger engine blew a rod. I didn't have much money, and a guy offered me the 223 for a 6 pack of beer. So I took it, installed it, and drove the truck for 2 years on that engine. Any later model option is going to need side motor mounts which means you need a cross member, or brackets like the ones Col. Flashman used when he put the 300 in his '59. If you can put the side mounts in I would vote for a 300. It is pound for pound the best engine Ford ever built.
