could it be my u-joints?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Jan-03 AT 11:19 AM (EST)]on my 84 f-250,the tires have not been removed, the vibration just started one day. it seems to have started after i changed my alt. i get a viration that has an on and off rythem, it comes on at 55 and stops at 65. it starts quiet and gets louder. it seems to be coming from under the cab. the rear u-joint is tight so it could be the front one.
what happens after the noise, do they break or keep making the vibration?
which u-joints are better, sealed or greaseable?

could it be my u-joints?

also if i floor it from a stop, the vibration goes not begin, so its speed related not rpm related and its not the alt.

I've never let one wear out so bad that it broke, but I imagine that could be the end result. If it is the u-joint, get one with a grease fitting, or a threaded hole for one and put in your own grease fitting. I have had better luck with name brand stuff, like Dana/Spicer, than the cheap ones they sell at the discount parts store. Also, check the bolt that holds the yoke onto the output shaft of the tranny, those come loose sometimes, and if it has a 2 piece driveshaft, check the carrier bearing. The driveshaft slip yoke being worn could cause a vibration as well, but they dont seem to wear as fast as u-joints. Do you hear any 'clunking' when you shift back and forth from park to reverse or nuetral to drive?

the clunk is not that bad, is more like a click
