I have an '89 ford F250, 2 wheel drive, 7.3 diesel, auto OD. Last night, I noticed the ammeter needle jumping a bit, then a few miles or less later, the transmission just seemed to be in neutral. It won't go forward or reverse. The fluid is OK, and the linkage is working OK. Is there an electronic switch or sensor that might have gone bad?
doesn't seem like the tranny would go out that suddenly. The OD light comes on and the turn signals work, so I don't think it's a fuse. (The book says it's the same fuse for both). Any suggestions or help?
Check the fluid level with the engine running and engine off. If the fluid level is the same then the pump is not pumping the fluid, the fluid should be high on the stick with the engine off.
If it holds it has to be the tranny, It would be a rare failure if the fluid level drops with engine running, holds in park, and no engagements forward and reverse.
Nothing electrical can cause this, you can even unplug the transmission and it will still engage in forward and reverse.
I have seen the overdrive planet splines strip long ago, but that is the only thing that comes to mind. It is a 89 so its possible, it would cause it to suddenly stop moving, hold in park, and a good pump. You may want to remove a coolerline and check for fluid movement, just to double check the pump.
Its sounds like it will have to come out and get inspected.
