thanks for you concern.......

To answer your 1st question, I have access to gauges and ac tech. I'm looking forward to the "refresher course" in A/C 101. Thanks for telling me where the high and low sides are located. Thanks the info.

The thread from the DEAD......

I revived this thread, because this issue has not been resolved.
Let's reset this issue. My A/C doesn't work. Turn my A/C switch normal or Max A/C, no action. No cycling of the compressor.

Okay guys, I got to check my pressure in my A/C lines. Got r-134 refill with gauge. Low side, 37psi while engine running. Per the directions, it tells me that the system is charged. I could not check high side, did not have a gauge available.

Well, I have checked all fuses for any "blown" fuses, none found. I can't figure why the A/C compressor is not "cycling". I can turn the clutch by hand with no problem. I was advised that there could be a "fuseable link" could be the problem????? I need some help. Please help a brother out.

Did you check the low refrigerant switch?
The 37 psi listed in the directions is with the engine running and the compressor clutch engaged. The low side pressure with the clutch not engaged would be higher. There probably isn't enough refrigerant in the system.

Disclaimer: I am most definitely no ac guy. But I do have a thread started in the ac/heating/cooling section with the same thing happening. Through some searching, guys in that forum say to take the handle of a screwdriver, tap your comp. clutch, and see if it engages. If it does, you 've got excessive clutch gap. If it doesn't, which mine didn't, then it could be a host of other things. Steve, aka "ProjectSHO89" seems very knowledgeable and he may be able to help you. Keep track of your pressures because he will want to know what they are.

I'm not an expert on AC or AC gauges. I needed a set of gauges for very rare useage, and found a new set at Harbor Freight for about $35. They are are ok for using rarely. If the gauges you are looking at are older, they may need adaptors to fit both R12 and R 134a.

Those are the gauges I have.
So far I've only used them once, but they worked fine.
I just can't justify buying good tools that I only use a time or two.
Good Luck Frank

The Low side should be about 85-90 PSI with the compressor off.
You need 43.5 PSI on the low side for the compressor to start to cycle.

Here is a wiring diagram:

Okay, I will check into that. But, is there a way to bypass compressor switch to see if the compressor is ok?

Sure, unplug the low pressure cutout and jumper the two pins in the plug you remove.
Then turn on your A/C system.
Do not run it very long that way as there is not much cooling for the compressor or lube.

Subford, thanks for the info. I was able jump the compressor. And it engaged. Disconnected the jumper and put the plug back in. Ok, I got a can of Arctic Frezze (WalMart) with a gauge on it, low side. It was reading about 38 psi while engine running A/C on (not engaged). Then, I was refilling it and the gauge got into the yellow area (45 psi). So I stopped. Still no compressor engagement. Hopefully Monday I will have some (real) gauges to see how low am I. Now if I can't get any gauges, can I still jump the low pressure switch and refill without damaging something? Please advise.

Is there a way to test if the low pressure switch is bad?
