i've been looking into buying a 2 car trailer to pull with my f250. i wanted to know how much weight can be carried without having to stop at the weigh station or having the state troopers hassling you. i'm hoping the the trailer i eventually buy will be a 14k gvwr with brakes on both axles. would hydraulic brakes or electric brakes be better in this situation? i've heard many stories that you do and many that you don't so i am as confused as can be, so and info would be great. by the way i live in texas and will do most (maybe all) of the hauling here.
You should not have to worry about anything if you are just pulling a 2 car trailer. Weigh stations here in SD you have to have commercial plates to go thru. Even if you have to go thru them you should not have any worries. The 2 car open trailer we have now gvwr is 20000(fifth wheel). It is just a basic 36 foot bed with 2 axles. Electric brakes will be just fine with a trailer like this.
Unless you are hauling real valuable cars normal good pickup and trailer insurance should be just fine. If you are hauling something of great value you should talk to your insurance agent to be sure you are covered just in case.
If you are hauling for pay you should check with your insurance company about what your insurance will cover. I checked into hauling tractors for a local guy who buys and sells and found the proper coverage prohibitive. I am not willing to get my derriere in a ringer due to not having proper insurance/permits/paperwork etc.
Just a thought, not related to weight, from someone with 35 years in the trucking business.
