So i have 3.55's now, but switching from the stock 235 to 285 I did notice a power difference in take offs. And towing 8000 lbs can put my egts in the red really quick. Now I am getting a bigger trailer for moving dirt and gravel off job sites and will easily be 12- 14k. I can make the 3.55's work on the highway but grades and getting on and off the job sites is hard on the tranny. So the cheapest fix I can see is a re-gear. I drive around 100 miles daily so I need the medium of towing some and MPG mostly.
I was thinking 3.73's over the 4.10'
What do you guys think?
How hard is it to change gears? And looking around I see sets around 180 but then master install sets for around 350. WHat do I need?
I have 4.10s and have 33's on it right now. It doesnt like to go much over 70 though. I have only had it a couple of months but it pulls my 27' trailer with two 4 wheelers in the bed just fine. I get 16mpg on the freeway.
I had 4.10's and switched to 3.55's. I had 215/85/16 and now I've got 37/12.50/16.5's. I like it very much better this way. I've never had trouble pulling anything I've hooked up to, but then I don't haul like some of the guys on here.
After re-reading your post, I think you may want to regear. Pulling in soft soil, hills, etc, is not something I have to deal with very often. Also, mine's a 5speed, so the overall gearing is a little shorter on mine. Yeah, on second thought, re-gear, or stay with the smaller tires.

3.55's with 37's? Wow! and you tow? I would think the truck would be enough weight
The 4.10's would be awsome but I don't like the 16 highway MPG. I get around 20 highway average 18 mixed driving around DC. I just didn't want to get the 3.73's and wish I had more, but then it might be enough. If I didn't like the 4.10's I could move up to 35" tires, but then i would need the 6" lift and ...well those off you who are married know where i am going with this.
Did you change the gears yourself? Is it pretty straight forward--or best left to someone whose done it? THat is the bigest question I have$$$$ I don't want to have to pay someone 500-700 in labor to change them out.
I was in a shop the other day and they said they only charge $150 for labor. Each axle of course. I didn't think that was too bad. I'm sure you could find somewhere there around the same rate.
I had someone else do it. Swapping is easy. Setting the backspacing is where it gets a little dicey. That's the first work I've ever paid anyone to do other than body work.... If I could get it done for $150, it wouldn't even be a question.
you could put a overdrive on it put that wouldn't be cheap either
Well actually he would need an underdrive unit. USgear sells them. not cheap, but it shifts with the push of a button, and you can shift under full load at any speed. they are rated for 35,000 lbs and the unit will reduce your gears by 20%, or increase by 20% if you get an overdrive unit.
Edit: this means that when disengaged you'll still have 3.55, but when engaged you'll have 3.55 x 1.2 = 4.26.
