I might be looking at picking up a 84 F250 with a 6.9 Diesel. It is missing the trans and transfer case. Looking at it as a nice little project. I would like to plow snow, and pull trailer. I have a 18' that I use to move a smaller loader around with and a 10' box that I use for odd things.
I have never owned a diesel so what should I be looking for in way of BAD things here. Im not sure if I can start the truck ( no trans so not sure what might be unhooked)
a trans is bout 100 bucks from a junkyard and super easy to put in ( need bout three guys to pick it up if ya dont have a transmission jsck to get it into the clutch ) im sixteen and out it in in bout 4 hours with simple hand tools. as for pulling loads and plowing snow ITS A BEAST it plows snow so well and goes through some really deep stuff wit the right tires ... i havent been displeased with mine at all only thing is they can be a p.i.a to start sometimes
Installing a trans and transfer is not something I am worried about... Been there done that a few times. The old transfer in my 76 F100 weighed more then the 390 under the hood I think! I'm more worried about having to work on the engine as no Diesel knowledge. I have rebuild a few gas engines but ....

the diesels in these trucks are very simple, and plenty of people on here to walk you threw it, the transfer cases really aint that heavy in these truck, the transsmissions well i dont know about that cause i havent ever had to pick one up yet
i think these are some of the easyest diesels to work on i have very little knowledge of diesels except how to turn the new ones haha but if i dont know something i ask the guys here and they will walk you thru whatever you need to do or they will help diagnose the problem
hey ohio, i got my 87 6.9 about a year and a half ago, knowing nothing other than how to crank it and drive it. The guys here have helped my many many times to keep it going... post your questions and or symptoms and after a few smart alec remarks you'll get one of the guys who knows their stuff. just listen to them and they can keep you going great, and you learn a lot really fast doing the work yourself. and they are very inexpensive to work on overall, especially when compared to the prices for the PSD's.
If you have rebuilt gasser motors, then you are capable enough with a little help from the FTE folks.. They are very simple Diesels and an awesome place to learn the basics of a Diesel.
