Recently purchased 2008 F250 6.4L XL (new), really like the truck and quite impressed with its performance. I do have a noise coming from the left side of the engine compartment after the motor is warm (upon hearing it your first impulse would be to reach over and turn the heater fan motor off, the growling noise it makes sounds just like bad bearings on the blower motor) it is not the blower motor. There is no loss of power, but the noise is rather annoying. Unfortunatley it does not do it when its at the dealership, any ideas? Oh yeah this is the first diesel I've owned (hence the name) and this also the first time I've ever posted anything anywhere. I've owned numerous Fords in my past and feel that Ford has and does build the best truck going. Thanks
I am not sure what to tell you. There are a lot of components there - vacuum pump, fuel cooler, EGR coolers, turbos are on top, power steering pump, and the brake master cylinder/booster.
Make sure your fluids are full and that your front wheels are parked so as not to put load on the power steering pump while you are parked and snooping around.
You should check out the 6.4 bible someone posted not too long ago.
not sure what you are hearing either. Could it be the clutch fan cycling? I think I would do what ruschejj suggested, with the truck running pop the hood and see if you can pin-point it from there.
I am gonna hazard a guess here and say it is the clutch fan (cooling) kicking in as senix says, especially since it is only happening when your truck warms up.. I got used to it in my previous truck ('03 Dodge CTD) but the first time my fan kicked on in my new truck I almost jumped out of the truck.. this thing is so quiet that anything out of the ordinary catches your attention quick... It may be something entirely different, but again as senix says, if you can get stopped and the hood up when it is doing the noise, you should be able to tell... or if you are in a dirt parking lot (and this is from past experience in my Dodge not the Ford) it should be kicking up a cloud of dust...
I've had the hood open and crawled over and under this thing while it was making the noise, feeling for vibrations or loose connections/bolts and could not pin point it. I supose at some point it will fail completely and they will be able to find it, hopefully I can get it to the dealer so they can hear it before it fails me on the road. I'm sure it is on the left side of the engine, I'll let you know when we locate it.
Mine has made a groaning/growling noise since new when it goes into regen. I allways thought it came from the drivers side but the last time it did it I had a friend with me (who is a Chevy salesman), he looked at me and said "what the heck is wrong with your truck" I said "nothin, why?"
He claimed it was comming from the passenger side right up under the dash but from the drivers seat it sounds like it's comming from that side.
Don't know what it is, just know it allways quits when regen is complete.
36,000 miles, most towing, hasn't blown up yet
Next time you are out and about buying fuel or something ask another 6.4 owner if you can snoop under their hood. If you happen to know somebody who has one, get together and compare things.
Best thing I can think of to do. Most of us 6.4ers would do just about anything to help another out. I know I have been asked many questions at the fuel pump from folks.
