well, I noticed my 71 f-100 making a ticking noise when driving or revved up. It has a 360 in it wi9th a 4 speed. I am thinking that it is a lifter. Can I adjust it or do I have to replace it?
today I pulled the valve cover off on the side that it sounds like it is coming from and notice that ever one is tight except the rear one on the pass. side. Would that be it?
Can I replace a lifter easily?
It isn't the fuel pump because you can notice the ticking in the upper part on the pass. side of the engine.
You can change just one lifter, not always the best thing to do, putting a new lifter on a old cam can be hard on it. With that beeing said, I have done it myself, my thought is, if things are going bad anyway, get as much use out of it as you can.
If you can get to the lifter and pull it without removing the intake, sometimes you can and sometimes you can not. Fish it out and fish in a new one with a magnet and reinstall the rockerarm. If you can not get it out, you will have to remove the intake.
pulled the valve covers off the engine and started it up to see which one was ticking.....and can't tell!! I only hear the ticking when the engine is revved when shifting. what do i do? nother thing, is it posible to take rearend out of early 90s f-150 with 3.08 gears and stik it under mine?

Your truck should have a Ford 9 in in it, that is a lot better rear than the 8.8. You can swap a 3.00 or even a 2.75 ratio chunk back in it's place. You have to determine if it is a 28 (which it should be) or 31 spline axle and swap them out.
It can easily be done in an hours time start to finish.
that is nice to know. I got that price quote from napa. Just today I went to a junkyard and this guy said he would sell me some 3.00s for $100. I might not mess with it though, I am thinking that the engine is getting tired and may need a rebuild, so I'll save my money.................390
The ticking could be an exhaust leak. Check around your manifold for black spots where it looks like exhaust was puffing out. also at the collectors where your down pipes hook up. Does your truck have enough oil in it?
you know, now that I think of it, it does have an exhaust leak right at the flange on the manifold. I know that ticks and I tried tightening it, but it still leaks.??? could that be it?
