Hello fellow lightning owners! I am thinking about purchasing a lightning and i was looking for as much feedback as i can get> I am looking for advice ,tips, and many ideas. I want to become a proud lightning owner! thanks in advance.
I have a gen 1 lightning and love it! It is great to beat most things stop light to stop light. The newer (99-2003) are much faster stock. The first Lightnings (93-95)came with a 351 windsor. The motor came with special GT40 heads and GT40 intake. The pistons are a special 8.8 to 1 compression using hyperutetic (-10 pts for spelling) pistons. It came with dual exhaust and 4.10 gear ratio. The rear end is even a special casting with cooling fins in it. The driveshaft is a light weight aluminum. The transmission is slightly different as well. using the heavy E4OD with some different parts inside for strength.
The new Lightnings use the 5.4 Triton with a supercharger. Again special pistons, exhaust,Transmission, and in later modles a low ratio rear end.
No mater how you look at it, you will be an owner of a rare vehicle that hauls, HAULS, and looks great!
thanks true blue. I am looking at a 99 right now and i am just absolutly falling in love with it. what mods have you done to yours? and also what mods have you heard that make the most difference?
thanks
Brad
While I have not done any performance modifications to my '01 (yet), all the information I've read suggests that a high flow air filtration system and a matching chip is a good start. You can expect a 28 - 35 HP increase for about $350.
I've ordered a FactoryTech valve body for the 4R100 as my first mod. I'm just waiting for it to arrive. I also purchased a SuperDuty 4x4 pan that holds an extra quart and has a drain plug in it. It's my understanding that the FactoryTech valve body will correct the somewhat sluggish shifts that the factory settings produce.
