Nope, 6.6 - cousin to the 7.8. Both inline sixes, mechanical injection. Finally found my answer on another post. Looked a long time yesterday and couldn't find it, this morning found it first thing, (approx. 50" long, 35"tall, and 1300 lbs.) Way too long for the space in my truck.
Guess I'll pop the heads off of the gasser in the old girl, and see what I've got. I was pretty torn between keeping her stock and having diesel power anyway. It's just that seeing that engine in the boneyard got me excited. Looked like a real recent rebuild - there was still some paint on the turbo, even.
You may want to double check the measurements. That 50" seems not quite right. The DT466E is listed as 46" from fan hub to rear of bellhousing. Go take more critical measurements from an actual engine. Overall dimensions dont count always. The length of the head will be a closer determiner if it'll fit. But 1100-1300 pounds is about right.
Okay, thanks. I'll definitely check that when the yard is open again. I belieive that the info that I found was supposed to be the horizontal measurement from front of fan to rear of head. Don't know how much the fan/clutch/hub add, but there are always electric pusher fans. Sure would hate for that to be visible in the grill, however. Guess I'll be able to find out more sometime next week.
The good part, the fan & hub are separate from the water pump, so you dont even need to run the fan. I have seen a 6.6, and they surely aren't bigger than a DT466. And, I was going to put a 466 in a Super Duty....but that's another story.
I have considered putting a 466 (from a bus a friend has) into my dads old 55 f600 and was sure it would fit, although i never did any measuring, however, i do belive that the 7.8 and the 466 are closer to the same size. so if the 6.6 is a bit smaller, I sure wouldn't have any doubt.
I remember seeing pics somewhere of a guy that put a dt466 into a highboy, he had to build a bit of a doghouse (like halfway to the dash) to get it to fit, but he did get it into there. which makes me wonder how much closer a 6.6 would be to fitting in a highboy... did you get those measurments?

This one? a 74 F250 krew kab. I havent talked with him in a few months, but he had a slew of new parts ready to go on. I've tried talking guys into swapping in a 6.6 mainly for the Ford logo on the valve cover(a cool look in an old rig). From what I know, the 6.6 is about 2" shorter in height than a 466 or 7.8.
Your only limitations are $$$$ and imagination....and a little ability goes a long way too.
With your '53, I wouldn't be too worried about the added weight, depending on if you run power steering.
2" shorter would be nice over the 466, but I would be more concerned about length. I definetly agree about the ford logo, even though you know that people would see a inline six and assume its a cummins, or that you drive a duramax when you tell them its a 6.6...
when I was considering a 466 swap, i was planning on trying to use the bus axles as well, however mostly due to being able to get aluminum rims for it. it would mean airbrakes though, unless you already have a cdl (which im assuming you do)
Sorry to start a topic and then not reply for so long. I got stranded in Raleigh with mechanical issues and a limited supply of tools. The one time I try to travel light for a change...
I haven't been able to get back to the boneyard for actual measurements, but the length is still scaring me. I don't really want to have to make any serious body modifications to get something to fit, as this truck is in really good shape in that respect. I gotta admit, the Ford logo on the valve cover definitely caught my eye but it may be that a Detroit would be a better fit. Still I'd much rather have an inline engine. I'll just have to check and see. It'll probably be a while now, though. Things are really backed up for me now.
