I am about to put a 289 or 302 in my son's 60 F100 2WD. It currently has a 351M (not original). It will have a 9 inch (probably 3.25). We are trying to decide on the tranny. I have a C4 currently behind the 289, an AOD currently behind one of the 302s and a toploader style (I know they don't consider it a toploader) overdrive. We are leaning towards the AOD as my son wants to get the best mileage possible. He will do very little towing or hauling with it. (He has a 68 F100 with a 351W and C6 if he needs to tow anything). What suggestions/comments do you guys have?
i would lean towards the AOD if it is in good shape. as long as you get the tv cable set up right and properly, that is the main concern with those trannies. if you don't, they don't last very long.
i would look at a little steeper gears if going to the AOD. probably 3.5's would be a good choice with the AOD and 302. still have good hiway rpm and good off the line capabilities.
of course there is nothing like rowing your own gears. although that tranny is not the most stout that Ford ever put out, it should be fine behind a mild engine. that would be my second choice.
How about a T5? It should get even better mileage than the AOD. Or maybe the 3 speed + overdrive (SROD?) (late '70s & early '80s), probably easily mistaken for a 4-speed, if you can find one.
