Hello - I am installing a tach in my 96 hightop. Any ideas on where to put it?....I dont really want to put it right on the dash, i was thinking possibly screwing the bracket into the bar between the windshiels and the door.....any ideas on the whole job would be appreciated!
Diesel, I have a '98 V-10 gas E350 15-pass. It has about 95K miles. I bought it used from a Ford dealer in 04. I have done nothing to the van since I bought it except to change the oil every 3K. I don't know what the dealer did to the van before I bought it, but it runs so smooth and quiet that sometimes I can't tell if the engine is running, like when I'm stopped at a red. I think to myself, did the engine shut off? So I'm thinking of installing a tach so I can check if that V-10 is purring. Since you've done one, is it an expensive endeavour, or did you do it yourself?

On the V-10 you may not be able to install a tach. You would need to build or buy and interface board to go from the digital ignition to the analog tach. THe V10 doesn't have just one coil, it has 10 individual ones. There is a tach reference wire in the computer but I don't think it would work for an analog tach. You might be able to find an instrument cluster with a tach in it. That would be a plug and play type upgrade.
I have mine mounted of the A-pillar;
There is a dedicated tach feed wire in the harness for the V-10. pfogle no need for any fabrication. This gauge will work on the V-10 straight out of the box; http://www.equus.com/product_info.ph...ategory_id=100
When I did mine it was a 4/6/8 tach and COULD be used on a V10 with an adapter. It was in the instructions. Then again that was over 5 years ago now. Where did you get the mounting pods? I looked all over when I did mine and couldn't find anything that would fit without major modification.
I did some research on V10 tachs when I got my 03 E350. There are some tachs that can be modified by the manufacturer for use with the V10. My solution was a Scangauge II which can give you much more than just a tach. It plugs into the OBD plugin for a simple hookup. The Scangauge itself is small enough to install most anywhere.
