I bought a 2006 F250 4x4 6.0 this morning. I have put 185 miles on it and it drove perfect. The darn thing just started 15 minutes ago making a growling type noice when I lift my foot off the gas to slow down. What the heck could this be? And do you know how the Tow Haul mode works? I need to know something, I might have to return the truck! I did an Oasis report and there was not 1 warranty claim.
It's called a "turbo fart". When you're hard on the skinny pedal, then let off suddenly, the vanes in the VGT basically choke down. The turbo has no wastegate, so the extra pressure gets pushed backwards out of the air intake, making the growling or chugging noise you're hearing.
Tow/haul mode is for towing or hauling heavy loads (obviously ). Basically, it changes the shift points on the tranny to account for the extra weight you're moving. Typically holding the up-shifts longer, but also downshifting on hills to help with engine braking.

But it just started happening. And it feels like it is in the rear end. I have a 7.3 2002 and i don't have turbo farts. But again It clunked coming to a stop just minutes before that!
Yeh steelhead that is what it is. I bought it from Lenz Auto in Wisconsin. They went through the truck before they sold it and replaced the pinion seal. However they didn't replace the crush sleeve and didn't tighten the bolt down enough. So the 200 plus miles I put on it did some damage. 2 People locally looked at it and said I probably need a ring and pinion. So there coming from wisconsin this morning at 8-9am to pickup vehicle and repair it at there facility. Wish me luck there has been some drama with the dealer so far. But it does seem like they want to fix it!
