the other day i was wheeling and i put it in 4wd to get up a mud hill and as soon as i let the clutch out i herd a metal-to-metal clink.
now i only put it in 4wd when i need to get unstuck. and every time i put it in 4wd now, i hear that cling from take off.
so today i crawled under it and started checking stuff out and came up with this. if i grab the front drive shaft before the slip joint with one hand, and the other half of the shaft with my other hand, there is about a 2 mm jiggle in every direction. well maybe not 2mm, but enough to hear it from the cab over 3000 RPMs.
so what im asking is is this a big deal? or fixable? or even worth thinking about?
If its only in 4wd your on the right track, If you only use 4wd to get unstuck it will probably not be in too much danger of breaking anything with a 300 and small tires. I would check and make sure that the yoke isn't loose and the u joints are ok. If you want to you can pull the shaft aand clean out the splines and then regrease them. my old bronco's rear driveshaft had the grease get rather hard in the splines. oh and there should be a grease zerk there to grease that.

thanks. the u joints and the yokes are fine. in fact all the u joints are new as of last year. everythings tight. just the slip joint wiggles. and alot.
