C6 suddenly lost 3rd!

I stopped to get gas and after leaving the station the truck will not shift into 3rd gear. The trans still shifts between all other gears fine. The fluid was a little low, so I added some and no difference. What could cause this?

Thanks in advance.

maybe the shift-indicator arrow says D but is in 2. i have seen this to be a common problem w/ ford auto's.

thanks,

Nope I verified that it was in drive. I shifted the trans manually from 1-2-D and it never shifts into 3rd.

Check to see if the passing gear link is stuck or disconnected leaving it in passing mode. If not, it could be the vac. modulator is on the fritz.

The kickdown linkage is not stuck. I checked that, plus the trans will downshift to first if you floor it at low speeds. I may have a spare vac. modulator I will try swapping it.

Treid replacing the vac. modulator, no change. I think the problem is in the valve body. I may replace it with a manual one.

get under vehicle and pull rubber hose of the canister on the rearpass side must feel engine run up on rpm or have 17 inches of vaccum this is the first then make sure the lever going down to trans is not stuck toward the ground

There is vaccum to the modulator and the kickdown linkage is not stuck. I just put some BG quick clean to see if that will help. I will flush the fluid after driving it some and hope that helps.

Light throttle 1-2 shift at approx 1800rpm.

Moderate throttle approx 2400rpm.

Heavy trottle approx 3500rpm.

Reverse is strong anything over light throttle induces wheelspin even with a lot of weight in the bed. Power braking in reverse the clutches hold.

I would think you have a stuck 2-3 shift value in the value body. If so that may mean there is some trash in the fluid.

Thats what I am thinking. I put some BG quick clean in the trans, and I will flush it as soon as I can get it to my shop. The additive didn't make any difference so far. The trans was flushed a year ago with less than 3000 miles since it was done. If flushing doesn't help then I will install a full manual valve body.

Nevermind on installing a manual valve body. Today the trans began to slip in second gear, but not in first. A freind of a co-worker is a ford trans tech. I will have him overhaul my trans for me. That should take care of all it's problems.
