I have a 78 F150 4x4 with a D44 front axle and a Ford 9" 31 spline mini-spooled rear (3.50:1). I'm scanning e-bay for a cheap locker for the front but I'm not sure what to look for.
I see several d44 front lockers for jeeps but none for Ford. Are these the same? What spline count options are there for the d44?
You'll need a 30 spline dana 44 locker. You do know the implications of running a locker in the front correct. Lousy turning radius, broken axle shafts, non streetablity....unless you only use the truck off road, you may want to look at a limited slip for the front.
Thanks Ryan. And, yes, I'm aware of the implications. It's strictly off-road but I can unlock the hubs for road driving if I need to.
I wasn't aware of a limited slip diff for d44 front axle. I thought someone else here said they don't exist. Or was that just "from the factory" that they don't. I did see some d44 limites slip carriers on e-bay, but didn't look close. Does it matter if the carried is for the front or rear if I use my own gears?
Since it's strictly off-road a locker is what you want. Many, many limited slips exist for the D44, but they'll never provide the no-nonsense traction a locker does.
If you want cheap, get a LockRite.
Any 30 spline locker for a Spicer Dana 44 will fit your Ford.
You can find Lock-Rites for as low as $230-$250 for the D44. The cheapest place I ever found was from Jeep place... they advertise in the mags.... mighta been that Think Jeep! place..?
Just tell 'em you need a 30 spline D44 LockRite, doesn't matter what it's going under.
