Hi all. Nothing serious this time. I just have a few questions.
1.) I read somewhere around here if you disconnect the battery for 15 minutes it will reset the codes and also cause the vehicle to run lean on the highway. Is this true?
2.) I want to start using Gumout Fuel Injector Cleaner again. When is the best time to put this in my fuel tank? I have about half a tank of fuel right now. I was thinking about adding it on 1/4 tank and fill it up.
3.) Concerning the Idiot Guage, at what point do I need to pull over and allow my motor to cool down? My motor runs hot if driven for long periods of time (about 4 hours or so). I accidental brought the needle all the way to the red line on the N O R M A L Guage one time. I pulled over and let my motor cool down. I was afraid I cooked it but it's fine. Me and dad replaced the thermostat. My motor seems to run within normal temperature limits if driven like normal (running to the store, work, church).
Thanks guys.
-Bill
Edit: By the way guys I realize these questions aren't real important but I'm asking because I don't know. I do appriciate your time and insight!!

Yes and No.
You disconnect the battery for 15 minutes to reset the computer if you have replaced a sensor. You will also lose any codes that you may have so you need to record them before you disconnect the battery.
You clear the codes with the STI wire.

I do not put anything in the fuel tank and I use 3M injector cleaner put in at the fuel manifold with the fuel pumps disabled.

You need to fix why it overheats, larger radiator or have it cleaned, engine reversed flushed with air pressure, make sure bottom radiator hose has a spring in it and so on.
i would try just flushing the radiator first, then maybe check the sensor and sending unit. it might not actually run hot. oh ye and check your radiator cap sometime they dont seal.
Like I said my motor runs cool when under normal driving situations. I know the idiot guage was working when I over heated my motor. Coolant was bubbling out of the cold fill box. I was told it might not be a good idea to flush my rad because like a transmission you can encounter problems if you do this. I have had this truck 4 or 5 years and never had the rad serviced. I don't know what all should be done to it for one thing. Secondly I don't know how it was serviced before. I don't want to flush my rad and develope a leak. Would it still be better to just change my rad fluid? What is involved with cleaning a rad?
Flush the cooling system with a auto store flush kit. Flush it, open drain ****, refill with water, let it drain, close drain **** refill with water. Drive it, flush it, open drain ****, refill with water, let it drain, close drain **** refill wtih proper coolant. It wouldn't hurt to blow out the radiator fins with compressed air. I found would it works best with you blowing the air from the back of the radiator out the front.
I use Techron fuel system cleaner. Run tank as low as possible, add cleaner, refill with 8 gallons or so(treats 12). Run tank as low as possible and repeat. You should be good to go for awhile after that.

I was 15/16 when I bought the truck. I didn't know any better.
It could be possibly that your radiator cap is bad, not holding pressure. when it doesn't hold pressure anymore it's not forcing the coolant through the block as fast as it should, so the coolants not cooling as efficently as it should be.

The pressure is to raise the boiling point of the coolant not to force it through.
