i watch ax men american loggers iceroad truckers pretty much anything on discovery or history channel
Yup, Add them to my list as well...
I have done the logging thing, so it's interesting to see how much things have changed since my days in the woods. I really was a mechanic but those that know how it is, know that when another person is needed you are it, so I have done many things.

i got offered a job logging in northern wi i am pretty sure i am gonna take it they do things a little different around here than they do on ax men
I like how the guys on American Logger talk about how bad their roads are that they are running on. I'd love to take them for a ride on some of our haul roads. Drop off the side of a canyon, straight up on one side, 1000 ft drop to the bottom on the other, just wide enough for the truck. VW sized boulders to cross over. Maybe put 6" of fresh snow or drop some rain to make it interesting. There are many jobs I've hauled on that I got drug in by the Cat, and back out the same way. Just another day in the woods.
Has anyone seen Wreckreation Nation on Discovery? It follows the same format as Dirty Jobs, but it features what people do for fun. Pretty neat show. There was one on the other night about civilian sniper training school and another had some people in the NE that had a Drive A Tank park, where they had demilitarized British tanks.
I'll admit that I watch a lot of TV. Tivo and Satellite TV is a bad combination
I had a great time when doing the logging stuff, Not as a mechanic though, I didn't like doing things like final drives, tracks, rollers, drive sprockets etc... etc... on the side of a mountain in the dark, rain and muck.
We had one operator that I hated, the only person in my life that I actually wanted to kill. He always got himself and equipment in over his head and broke something in the worst possible places, Not to mention the winch nests he always caused, I learned some pretty good tricks for putting tracks back on because of this idiot.
But he also got the most wood to the landing in a day, so bosses ignored the equipment damage for the most part, he did get fired and re-hired several times for doing stupid things, like rolling a brand new JD skidder down the mountain.
Today it's all about Yarders and Yoders, Electronic chokers and such, Gravy train!

There is still quite a bit of skidder logging being done in the NW. I wouldn't consider a yarder being easier. If everything goes smooth, it can take a half a day to get set up on a landing where with a skidder you're bring in loads immediately. But yarder logging more efficient and the environmental impact is a lot less.
And a yoader just means one less piece of equipment to buy and maintain which is nice for a small operation.
Yea, I know, I was being facetious, It is tough work any way you look at it. No matter what equipment is used.
I have only worked/setup one yarder, so I really don't have much personal experience with them. And the only reason a yarder was brought in was the terrain, It was to steep for skidders and dozers and there was a creek at the bottom.
