You can have your rear axle re-geared to a different ratio- no need to swap the entire axle. Gears should run about $200, install kit about $150, and labor around $300. If you have a 4x4, then both axles should be done so you don't break the transfer case and a bunch of other driveline parts.
The only thing I can think of that your husband may be talking about would be the US Gear overdrive/underdrive units. They bolt onto the tranny/transfercase and either give you increased overdrive or underdrive on-demand. They, however, are not cheap at all- $2K+. You can get more information on these units from a good RV place.
