4x4 Clunk

Well when I have my Hubs locked in my steering jumps when turning (normal) but last night I was in some mud and I hammered it and spun the tires in 3rd gear. Then all the sudden the front caught and I heard a clunk. And now when I turn with the hubs locked I get a noise and the jumping. Im thinking a U joint broke, but I have not looked under there. Any ideas?

More than likely its a U-joint...worst would be a stripped out hub or damaged differential. Take a look and let us know what you find out.

You can definately check your U joints. you said it only makes the sound when your turning? and it jumps? Ive had 2 of the 96 250's including my current one and neither of them have jumped when turning and the hubs locked in. Ive had a twang sound from the driveline and then a grinding sound (like a brake pad and rotor going metal to metal) caused when I shelled out a hub. Have you ever checked out the condition of your hubs? properly greased etc. does it pull to one side at all with it in 4x4? have you checked the fluid level in your front diff? Have you greased the ball joints and steering linkages? All these things would be good things to look at. These things could cause the binding/ jump. Some of them could indicate a much more expensive repair too. Hopefully its just a u joint though. Ujoints run about $20, Hubs run about $200, differenatials run a lot more.

Never greased anything or changed any diff fluid... The jumping is not litteraly jumping, but the feedback you feel in the wheel when turning in 4x4 becuase the inside tire has to go around same as the outside.

I'll look under the truck tommorow and report back

Thats the damage... and it looks to be the only damage. how hard is it going to be to replace, since the shaft is hidden inside that metal square casing? What does it require to replace?

Pretty straight forward stuff. But time consuming. You will need a specific socket to remove the rotor / bearing assembly. Good time to replace brakes, bearings and seals, pivot bushings and such. Do both sides and use u-joints that you can lubricate. Also I believe the 50 has to be removed from the axle housing to pull the passenger side axle. A c-clip has to be pulled. Haven't done that yet myself. So don't take it as gospel. Looks like tie-rod ends are in your future too.
