ok. so today i did the common hub upgrade on the f150. put in the manual locking warn hubs, which went fairly well. Nothing broke so overall it was a good day. i had planned on changing out the rotors and pads while i had the hubs all torn apart as well due to the condition of those. just as i had gotten the hub torn apart my buddies dad notified me that i had some sort of bearing seal or something that i needed to replace..???when i got the new rotors and pads at NAPA they said nothing about this seal..... from what i was told it was just to keep my bearing clean or something of that nature... is this true?? if so does anyone have any pics, or part numbers that could help me out? thanks/
There should be a seal on the inside (side facing the diff) side of the hub. This seal stops water and dirt getting into the bearings and also stops grease getting out onto the rotor. It is a standard front hub grease seal and should be easy to replace, just put the new one in facing the same way as the old one. Did your friend notice grease on the old rotor?
no, he didn't notice grease on the rotor. his dad for a long time had his own shop(where i was working on it at) but due to the economy he had to shut his doors, and look for income elsewere. while we were working on it he told me of this seal and said that i had to replace it. I am going to take his advice, because he knows this year f150, and broncos like the back of his hand. he said if i wanted to be cheap i could still do it without replacing the seal, and just ni**er rig it, but i wanted to do the job rite so i was going to wait till i got the proper parts. on this little project i was going to do the hub conversion, rotors, pads and repack the bearings on the front.... as you can see things didn't go as planned so now i have these great hubs on the truck, but still have those crappy pulsating brakes. The pads themselves still have about 50% on them but i just bought the truck, and the rotors are warped..... i figured when i do the rotors, i would put on some top of the line pads on that i know when i changed out last. i will be running up to NAPA later to get a PCV valve for it and would like to get those "seals" that i need as well so i can do the brakes this weekend.....
