I just bought a 1987 F-250 ex-cab 4x4 460 for $800 with 115k miles!
After a tune-up, oil change and a new Holley carb, the truck runs GREAT!
Problem: There is an exhaust leak somewhere. I haven't located it yet, but I can surely hear the ticking. I have checked the manifolds and found nothing.
I contacted the previous owner, who told me it's been 'ticking' for a year or so ( few thousand miles ) and he never had it checked out.
What damage could have been done in that year? The rig seems to run well, though I think it could have more power while towing. What could happen if I finish the season towing with it, then rebuild the exhaust in a few months?
I've read where the 460 is notorious for exhaust manifold gasket leaks they can be a pain. I went with stainless steel bolts on mine, seems I was always changing gaskets and the steel bolts were binding up and giving me false torque readings.
It's nowhere around the manifold gasket. I'm thinkin it's the donut or somewhere in a weld, since this is a custom built exhaust. I want to get it in the air so I can inspect it further.
I just wonder if it could have caused damage, or if it's just like running open headers....
should be no damage unless you claim mental anguish.ha ha...if it is the exhaust dounut it will ruin the doughnut over time but they are cheap...motor will be fine
