Just a question for the experts from a newbie, but this winter my wife got stuck twice with the excursion. She stopped in some mud and the front tires would not engage. She was stopped, so 4 high was out, but I told her to put it in park, switch to 4 low, and try again, and still no luck.
So I tried to switch the front hubs to "lock" and could not get them to move at all. Truck is an 04 with 111000 miles.
Four wheel drive works when you leave the hubs on auto, you can tell for sure by the "dog walking" when you turn, but I am not sure if 4 low works.
If I'm not mistaken you need to be in "N" to go to 4 lo. Try that and you will tell when in 4 lo because of the torque that you get when in 4 lo compared to 4 hi.
Also good Idea to take the hubs apart and lube them. At that time see if you can get the dial to turn. You will have to spray them liberally with a good penatrating oil. Here is the link to hubs and many other little main tips. Welcome to guzzle's Ford PSD Web Pages
Actually the ESOF hubs need some slight movement to fully engage. Hence the override/manual locking feature.
If you get stuck at a complete standstill and you can not get any movement, THAT'S when the override feature comes in handy...and the reason it's there.
