Put on Centramatic Wheel balancers model 300-308 last night, install was pretty straight forward a little light sanding to get the rust off the hub area and a little more on the inner circle of the balancer. Tires seem to stick to the road a bit more, time will tell if they work or not. Will keep you updated.
Also got the wife to buy off on getting Amp Powersteps due to the current $200 rebate from Bestop. Found them cheapest (not cheap just cheapest) @ 4wheelonline.com. I will try to take good pics, wiring etc and do little write up to "give back" to the forum. I am usually head down and charging forward when I do a project and forget to take pictures, so this will take some doing.
Here are some photos. I paid 189 from NWTruckworks in Oregon. It comes with 4 "balancers" 2 marked A and 2 marked B. Based on the directions you choose based on fit which ones you use where, you just have to have A's up front and B's in back. These fit several different vehicles. The A's were flat, I have those in back, the B's were "dished" I have those in front. You can place them with the balancer tube in or out. In front I put the tube out (due to caliper) and the tube inward on the rear. My lie o meter has gone up .3-.6mpg so it is doing something as I haven't changed my driving style. Here are the pics. Click to make them bigger. Now I'm waiting on the Power Steps.
The outer edge is a tube w/some sort of oil and shot (bb's) that balance the wheel more precisely and continuously than lead weights, like when you have a rock in your tire or when a weight falls off. There is a video at centramatic.com.
Nothing special to the balancers such that they will not work on after market rims, or larger ones....I have some up front only on mine to help with the 35s, I think they do some good, but still get some shimmy once in a while. THey add 3 ounces (IIRC, might be 6 ounces) of balance weight. I know I wanted the hummer set as they have more weight to balance larger wheels. I have a small spacer on the front as well so I can put the balance ring inward. I put them on my Wrangler as well...front only on both vs one full set.
When I had my Toyota running 35s, I had some bad experiences balancing a set of mud tires. At the time, I was looking at Centramatic, but it wouldn't had fit my front due to the large caliper disc brakes that comes on some of the Tacoma trucks. I then started searching for an alternative, which is Dyna Beads. It's similar idea, but would work irregardless of tires and/or wheels.
