trailer wiring

I have a 1990 F150 XLT. It has ABS and all that other fancy stuff. I know on newer model trucks have electric trailer brake control units are integral in the truck, that is, you do not have to had an aftermerket controller. Does anyone know if this is true on a 1990? They also have the backup lamps and an accesory wire prewired into the harness. Routing around under the rear of the truck I found two capped harnesses, one that obviously has some kind of lighting involved with it because the previous owner had a wiring harness hooked into it. This harness has four (roughly)16-gauge wires in it. The other harness has nothing hooked or spliced into it. It has four hefty wires feeding into it (roughly) 12-gauge. I wonder if there is some kind of factory trailer setup that went into it. I would like to use as much of the factory intended circuitry as possible. The truck has a "TRAILER TOW" relay for the tail lamps. This seperates the trailer lights from the truck lights. I want to keep it this way. Can anyone help by answering my questions?

Well Albert you seem to be mislead the newer trailer packs still require the addition of an electronic brake controller it just doesn't have to be "hardwired" in, that is it has a plug under the dash for the controller to plug into. It is possible that your truck came equipped with some sort of tow-package, I believe the wire colors would be ; yellow- left turn, green- right turn, brown- tailmarkers, and maybe green/purple- reverse lights in one harness. in the other harness I think there will be a Red-12V power and a Blue- electric brakes. the other two wires in that harness I not sure of. If these wire colors are similar to what you have then we can talk about completing the package. Hope to be of some help.

Albert,
Like Dustin said you will have to add a brake controller, the only question is if the truck was pre-wired to accept one or if you will have to run the wiring yourself. From what you describe it sounds like your truck was pre-wired. You can also check under the dash for the red and blue wires that Dustin mentioned. Hope I helped.
