i have a 95 f350 460 5speed. i am getting really crappy gas mileage, should be around 10-13 mpg, i did have codes for act and ect and i just replaced em, replaced fuel filter, cap rotor, plugs, wires. timing is good, thermostat is good. idles and sounds great but i get 90 miles to a tank. no other codes are present at the moment. what else could it be. could the o2 sensor be bad even though it aint throwing a code. thats the only thing i can think of to change next. fuel pressure is also good. please help the wife is gonna shoot me if i cant get it fixed. thankyou
check for vacuum leaks. mine was the same when i bought it (f250 460 e4od 4:10's) went thru 16 gallons in 75 miles all highway. turned out to be broken fitting on vac line off passenger side valve cover.
hmm ill check that, i saw earlier the line going to one of them canisters on the right hand frame is pretty much hanging there. maybe we'll c, i didnt think a vacuum leak would cause such a huge drop in mpg. maybe since speed density runs off of vacuum lol.
I have a 97 F350 E4OD that gets about 5mpg on short trips and 8 on the highway....I have yet to be able to track down what is causing the problem. Luckily, It is a ranch truck that doesn't get driven everyday.
If you figure this one out...let me know!
My next step is to have the fuel pressure regulator checked. Occassionally I can smell fuel at the front of the truck while idling. Truck runs great and idles smooth with no codes....hard to believe that pouring way to much fuel into the thing wouldn't create any driveability problems! But, it appears that these things just suck it down and keep going!
Hows the performance? is it not running like a 460 should?(lots of power).......Dont discount a plugged catalytic converter,.......That can REALLY suck the gas.
on the performance note, does burning out all 4 tires in 4 hi sound like a 460 caus it can without a wimper. as far as the cat, i dont think its clogged but i want to gut it anyway. the vacuum test will tell me if it is or not. im thinking the o2 it looks like its been there since the beginning so thats next to go. my friend has one of them super scanners and it can give live readouts of all the sensors so im lookin forward to that. i would love to get 10 mpg, thats close to 200 miles to a tank, i only get like 80.
changed the o2 today, but with my other replaced parts (act, ect fuel filter) i ended my first tank of gas at 110 miles, an improvement from 80. kinda curious of what next. oh i check all my vacuum lines and all are good. i need to check how much vacuum is being pulled at 2k rpm for the cat. any other ideas?
i think ive fixed the problem!!! see it was something i over looked/assumed was done. my f350 is lifted with 38.5" superswampers and yea i know im gonna get bad gas mileage but this is my 3rd f350 and the rest wer carbeurated 460 that got better mpg. i found out that i could changed the speedo/odo tire settings really easily from this link https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/...ND_BRONCO.html
come to find out the guy before me never actually calibrated it. so now its a hole new feel when ur actually going the speed the speedometer is saying. and now i can get the correct mpg caus the odometer will be correct as well. ahaha
Good man. Maybe now you can spend less time " under the hood of my truck". Although your "location" gave me a laugh as I know the feeling only too well.
Good luck with it.
haha...i was following this thread because 4.5mpg is crazy lol...i get about 9-11 down hill in the wind...good thing you fixed the problem!...nice find..nowthe wifey wont kill ya
Do you have dual tanks? If recalibrating the speedo doesn't make a big difference, there have been a few people that discovered that their bad gas mileage was caused by cross filling from one tank to the other.
what did u come up with now for the mpg. it does feel like a differnt truck when u really know how fast ur going. i get 11.9 mpg with 37s and 4.56 gearing with a 351 that needs a tune up ill trade u trucks if u want

Wish i could get 11.9 mpg with my 351w... Im getting around 7-8. I think the problems in the front tank though. Getting crossflow and leaking from there, so it may be alot better than this. lol
sorry about the delay between posts. found out that i have a huge exhaust leak at the manifold and the number 4 cylinder which caused the o2 sensor to read a lean condition and have the fuel injectors running at 100 % duty cycle. the fuel injectors were clicking pretty loud and as soon as i unplugged the 02 it stopped and now i can get 60 more miles to a tank just running in open loop. i have headers and a new y pipe on the way and i am gonna drill the sheered of manifold bolt so i can get a good seal. who knew right.
