ok so my check engine light has been coming on ever since it started getting warm. and it only comes on during start up and the truck starts surging kinda like a gasser with a cam then after a few secs it lvls out. then it idles with a miss you can drive it for 5 miles kill it and turn it back on and no light and it runs better. but anyways i took it to advance auto a week ago and the guy said the light had to be on for him to check it. so i took it back yesterday with the light on and his scanner can't read the rodes went to autozone to and they can't read the codes. any idea on whats my problem or how to read the codes???
Had same problem reading codes, they told me it was the module where u plug in the reader. Haven't figured out how to fix module. Ford also told me the same thing about bad module. Any suggestions from the ford fanatics would be helpful, beats spending loads of money replacing parts that don't need to be replaced ya.
The free scans from Autozoo, etc. won't read codes on the 7.3. The engine was designed as a medium duty truck engine, so it's not OBDII compliant.
For the idle issue, have you checked to make sure the engine oil is full? How long since you've changed the oil? If you unplug the ICP sensor, does the funny idle smooth out?
arkredneck, that is just about the same symptoms that im having every morning CEL running rough at start, but is fine when it warms if I shut off and start back up. tjbeggs told me to check my UVC im going outside right now to check some stuff out ill let you know if I find anything.
New or rebuilt? Sometimes there have been issues with rebuilts. Not much you can do with the IPR other than monitoring duty cycle on a scanner, pulling it out and eyeballing it and changing the o-rings. Sometimes unplugging the ICP sensor will trick the IPR into acting right for a bit.
With that said, how cold is it outside, and what oil are you running? Are you sure you don't just have a case of the romps?
