I had my friend rev it up for me yesterday when I got it done and its definitely loud and aggressive at the tailpipe but inside just sounds like a damned import... although it does kinda have a tone to it that makes it sound somewhat like a 6 cylinder diesel.
I've had a set of there Headers on my 83 351 for over 12 years and like them alot. Mine are chromed, and that didn't ever look the same after the first couple years but my rig got driven alot. Not for show.
The only prob I've encountered was that the pipe to collector welds failed at about 10 years, but only between the pipes. This could have been avoided by welding the inside joints before welding the collectors on,but no big gripe being that it took over ten years to show up.
The sound transmission you hear that resembles ricer, is the number of rowdy cylinders firing and the fact that the old cast manifolds muffled their voice by sheer mass wall thickness.
Imo all header installs have there technical glitches. Different bolt lengths and types tend to be necessary to accomplish a "easy" install. A pipe bending/exhaust flow analyzing/distributer of such a great ( solid product). may not provide the bottom line fasteners that would really make every installer/customer grin. Stainless locking fasteners that work in all locations, might be a stretch for there team to put together and not jack the price point.
Sounds like a great addition. I want em to.
Just a thought on the sound problem though. Turn up your favorite tunes, install sound deadener, bore the engine .30 over and run 11 to 1 compression on aviation gas, install a 8-71 roots blower ( they whine alot). But really, I hope the sound does'nt impead your enjoyment . Best wishes

I got plenty stereo to drown it out on the inside. I just don't wanna sound like a loser with a fart cannon on a big rig ya know? As far as sound deadener goes... I may do that sometime, just not in any immediate plans. Now .30 over and a really whiney blower sounds like my kinda plan.
Dew,
Are you happy with them then? On a scale of 1-10, do you recommend them? I'm gunna do headers with a cherry bomb extreme, the dang thing is 12" over all length(6"body ) so I'm hoping it sounds good.
As of right now... I'm not completely happy with it. But thats just based on what mine sounds like. Would I recommend it? Absolutely. They definitely out flow the stock logs and its a great reason to get the lousy studs replaced. I am pretty sure I gained some power out of them. I'm gonna need a couple warm days with it to decide how much I actually like it overall. But right now on 1-10 with 10 being highest... I'd have to go with a 6 or 7.
EDIT - I did have to drive the truck from the mechanic that put the headers on the exhaust shop with open headers lol. That was rather interesting. Sounded like a diesel clattering and everything. Was VERY loud. Good luck with the cherry bomb lol.
Wow, a buddy and I did that (open headers) on a whim one night 20 or so years ago. Waay loud. Both his mustang and my camaro where built to lift the front wheels ever so slightly when hammered to the boards. Both had 456 rear gears and long duration cams and all. Ear piercing to the point we only made it a few highway miles and turned around.
Seams a 8-71 blower would fit real nice on top of a v-10, length wise any ways. Heard of any such mods?
I'll be in Jackson Ridge IN. in the fall. Very nice part of the country. I've been real jealous of the no-IM situation you all live under for many years. The 10 in your rig would need a re-tune at least to live without the Cat. Twin low restriction units would be a nice way to separate the banks and give the rig a v-motor sound, back. The blended cat back tones of today don't ring the same.
Newer fuel injected, computer controlled , engines can be run without the cats (provided no after cat sensor)with reprogramming. Without having anything like the old fumes and tremendous amounts of harmful byproducts produced like leaded fuel swilling hot rods of the past. Its always been about the tuning to a large extent(complete combustion). But thats my rant, sry.
Maybe a nice after market, cat back split with small dual turbo style mufflers would give her a low rumble and cover up the under hood ping of the headers?
Well i pulled the trigger yesterday, and after alot of looking I went with some hedmans. They are ceramic coated. I just liked the way these went together over the thorleys. Also the ceramic should hold up way better then the chromed, so what ya think?
I too like the way the Hedmans pull together but I went with the Thorley's over the Hedmans because the Thorley headers were made of the thickest gauge steel of all the headers I looked at.
On the ceramic note, dkf I believe has ceramic Thorley's. He said the coating did not hold up very long.
Oh ok, well I will have to keep an eye on the coating, cause if it fails they have a warenty claim to deal with. I also was looking at the thickness and just was not sure about it, the think that put we over the edge was the way they went together. But thanks for the heads up!
