I have a chrome bumpers now and just recently purchased painted bumpers for the front and rear. I have all the plastic/bracket off them now and I am cleaning up the rust that is on them.
They need to be repainted black(white now). Here are the options I'm looking at:
1: DIY bed liner material. Any suggestions on which brand to go with? I've seen 3-4 different ones
2: Paint
3: Professional spray on liner.
Next, the rear bumper has the back up sensors and my truck doesn't have them, so I want to eliminate them. I'm looking to go with some LED marker lights(2" round) or some LED 2"x6" stop/turn/tail lights. Both options will reqire cutting the holes larger.
Which would look better?
Or do I just leave the sensors and remove the wiring?
I purchased Herculiner to do something similar to the vehicle I ended up trading for my truck and never used it. Some guys in my Fire Dept used a different brand on the bed of one of our trucks and I'm not impressed with it. It is real thin and it comes off if you scrape something on it. It may not have been applied properly, though.
I would say to abandon the sensors in place and cut the wires if you weren't planning on coating/painting them. Marker lights would be pretty cool I think.
You could weld plugs into the holes on the back bumper. It doesn't have to be pretty if you go with the pro spray liner, which will cover the ground welds.
LineX, with UV protection added would be the way to go. To get the best deal go to the LineX place and talk to the guys there. Drop off your bumpers and ask them to spray them whenever they get a chance, like the end of the day when the gun needs cleaned out.
Prep your bumpers in advance with a wire wheel so all they need to do is spray them and be done.
Sine you live in WI, you might want the backs sprayed too, to keep the salt from eating them up.
The motorcycle shop has LED lights that wil fit in the holes with zero mods, just go to a decent size shop and they should have a wall or rack of LEDs. I second the comment JKBrad made about spraying the backs too, might as well do it right. Post pics when done.
4. Powdercoat
You can have powdercoat done in different colors now and it's mega resillient yet gives you that shiny look that you would get with paint
I've got estimates from a Rhino lining place and a Line-X place.
$350/both for the Rhino lining and $300/each from the Line-X place.
I have contacted a couple different powdercoaters and am waiting to hear back from them.
Still not sure on the lights, I made some carboard templates to lay out on the bumper to get an idea what it might look like with lights in there. I'll get some pics in the next couple days and post them up.
If you can get a look at something that has each of the coatings you are considering. Notworthy is that the Rhino and Line-X will be dull and the powdrecoat glossy. All three should be more than tough enough for bumper application but consider the look you are after .
We used to use rusteloum hammered on out roll cages it was pretty tuff for chipping and stuff. The black looks similar to a wrinkle finished powdercoated product... Probably the cheapest way to go and it dosent look like a cheap rattle can job if prepped right
Line X for sure. No other bedliner on the market is as durable and bonds to surfaces the way Line-X does. Not even Rhino Liner. A buddy of mine had his Dodge Ram bed coated with Rhino Liner and you could literally reach in the square holes on the bedrails and peel the Rhino Liner off. If you tried hard enough you could probably get the whole thing off in one piece.
If you get Line-X Xtra, it has a UV protectant in it and will remain glossy for it's life. I got my fender arches Line-X'd a few weeks ago without the UV protectant and it is still glossy.
Personally I would love it. I would have already done it to mine except for the fact that I want to build my own when I get the time, then have those coated. It looks like gloss black but with a little bit of texture. You can't get it sprayed on the plastic portion though. It doesn't adhere to plastic.
