Ball Joint replacement cost???

I just got back from a local repair shop about having the ball joints replaced. They quoted me a price of $80.99 each for upper ball joint and $123.23 each for lower ball joint. The labor was $480. The total bill with alignment was $958.39. That seemed to high, so when I got home I called the Ford garage and they wanted $57.98 each for upper and $86.90 each for lower. So I know for sure that the quote from the local shop wants to rip me off. What should I be looking to pay to have the job entirely done? the Ford garage seems like a deal compared to the other shop just based on parts alone.

I got a quote a few months ago from a Brake-Plus shop for a little over $800.

I just purchased a pair Moog (greasable) upper and lowers from one of the online vendors mentioned allot on this site. Without looking it up for you, I think it cost about 3-bills, and they were mailed to me. Just had em installed, along with a complete brake job (gave local garage all rotors and pads), and 4 shocks replaced at the same time. So 100% labor cost, was 5-bills, and I figure it should of been 6 for all that (but he wanted to make me a repeat customer). He brokedown the costs for each and the ball joint job was over 3-bills, so anything up to $400 install from a local shop sounds about right! Try getting the supplies yourself (skip their markup on them).

I found the Moog's for the same price as what the Ford garage wants for the factory ones. I just was not sure about buying parts and then taking them to a shop to install, I always thought they did not like to do that and would charge me more for labor. Maybe I'm wrong.

My mechanic will install customer supplied parts. But what you don't get is, if they supply the parts and something happens like a defect or something, the shop will guarantee the parts and labor for a year.

So IMO the 10-15 % markup the shop puts on the parts they supply is like an insurance policy for a year.
