400 casting number
Hey so i was wondering i have a 75 ford f250 with a 390 in it, casting number: D4TE
can i replace my 390 with a motor that is a 400 with casting number: D7TE

You can replace your 390 with a 400 but you will need several other parts such as engine mount towers, different bellhousing, flywheel, .etc. if it's a standard or different transmission if it's automatic, exhaust, and other things. You can do it but it's not just a staight swap

oh right on, yea it has a one ton tranny and transfter case in it, where the transfer case bolts right to the back of the tranny. so you can get different bell housings for the tranny to get the motor to bolt up to it? the motor mount towers, they just get the motor to sit a little higher right? im not gonna have to weld on new motor mounts am i? i also want to put headers on this set up, would there be enough room?

If it's a standard you can get a different bellhousing to fit the 400; if it's an auto tranny you will need a different trans. The towers are just different shaped to fit the motor mounts on the 400. I don't know if that means higher or not, I think most of the towers are riveted in, so you may have to drill, cut or grind them off. then you can probably just bolt the new ones in, but you might have to drill new holes for them. Headers are available for this application
