FTE Superduty Help

I need some convincing from the FTE guys. I am looking to purchase a 2006 F250 Lariat Crew w/ 6.0 in great condition. It has 55,000 miles and it would be my first diesel. I have owned (3) F-150s and looked at the 09s but the price is just too much to swallow. I put about 25K miles on a year, haul a boat about 3000 miles a year and total load is around 7500lbs (payload and boat). I occasionally haul larger equipment as well. I currently get 14 miles highway and 9 hauling. I am hoping the diesel gets better and what I have read it does. I will be lookign into a turner / chip but would like to know what to expect without. Would it be worth the money? If it gets 3+ mpg then yes but as you can tell I am not towing 15K so the power should be good.

Being my first diesel I am nervous to take the plunge but talk with other owners and they say I iwll never go back to gassers. The truck is in great condition and is being sold by dealer, clean oasis and the dealer did 100 point inspection and I have done a lot of research for things to look for but just need that nudge from others and anything I should worry about. I have read the new owners guides many times

I'd put money on it that you never regret going to diesel

I would buy it. My truck had a troublesome past and I bought it anyhow. I love it and I am now one those who will never go back to a gasser. FWIW, I get consistently better mileage than that with mine. Maintenance costs are higher, but worth it for what you get in return. Just my $0.02. Good luck.

If it's got a clean oasis, I think you'll love the truck. And you drive enough miles/year to justify it. My advice is to stay away from all tuners, unless you like having problems. It won't get you 3mpg anyway, and you won't need the extra power unless you want to race. I get 17-18 empty on the interstate, 11-12 towing on normal terrain, as low as 10 towing up the Sierra grades. My 5.4L F150 got 7-8 on the same hills.

A V-10 would work for you too, but like they said, once you go diesel you can't go back.

These are really the answers I needed. I actually just called the wife and she is going to meet me at the dealer to go over some items I would like to add and hopefully will pick her (the truck) up this weekend.

I don't regret the diesel. I get 17 to 21.6 (best) highway with about a 1,000 lbs. of gear in the back and 11 to 13 with the rig in my sig. Loaded the 5er is probably13 to 14k. Combo city/highway can be anywhere between 13 to 17 depending on foot position and the ratio of city/hwy.

Be greedy with price, ext warranty and service plans...Most dealerships are desperate for sales!

That can't be stressed enough...know where the truck has been and through. Given the chance I'd purchase my truck again (got it at 27k miles) because the Oasis didn't show any issues that would scare one away from the truck; though it did show some interesting things (like the gauge cluster was replaced). I run stock tunes and that's more than enough power to do what ever I need...pull boats, campers and car haulers loaded with 1/2 ton trucks/SUV with. My mileage stays in the 17-20 mpg area when running light, though with a trailer it drops down to 13-15 depending on how much I stay on the skinny pedal.

I love my diesel no regrets at all. If you get the diesel it is really important to keep up maintance, oil change , oil & fuel filters, etc. There is alot of information here on the 6.0 PSD upgrades, maintance, mods etc. Mine is 06 with 111,984 miles on it and hope to get 300,000 plus out of it. We have several 06 F-250 & F-350 that has already got 200,000 plus miles with no major problems.

I have a little over 100,000 on my 2003. It was my first diesel as well. Truck had 89,000 on it when I got it. Oasis was clean so I do not regret. Pull a 28' travel trailer with no issues. By it.....you wont be sorry.

Thanks everyone. I picked the truck up last night. Wife loved it and she is parked in the garage till I can transfer everything out of my old truck. I killed me not to drive it this morning. I will update pics and gallery next week when it is all clean. It rained on the way home last night.

the only dissadvantage is the maintenance price. I just purchased 15 quarts of oil and a filter $75.00 I try and pick up oil filters when pepboys has the 2 for 7 sale but I used up the last I had so it was $19.99 at tractor supply. They had the best price on the oil, $11.00 a gallon Other than that I wont ever go back to a gas burner.

What does the oil change cost? I looked at dieselfilters.com and looks like I will be able to change oil for around $80 using Motorcraft or Recor products. Does this seem close? Is it true that you really just need to change both fuel filters and HFCM drain about 22,000 miles or when the light comes on? I was planning to read the manual last night but the previous owner has it and is sending it next week.

I did get a chance to sit down with the head diesel tech at the dealer and he answered a lot of questions that I was planning on posting here. How I just need to get the right answer for idling. Is it better to leave truck running when parked or turn it off. I have seen mixed reviews on here. I am not talking long idles but say I drop the wife in the store and I sit in the lot for 10 min.

The only time I idle my trucks is at warm up (high idle) and stop lights. If you have an EGR system all that idling is gumming up your intake.
