Can anyone tell me what rear i have from the tag #s-tag reads s862b 55 88 sf27-it is starting to make a grinding noise and i have to replace it or do a rebuild -is a rebuild difficult or can a pretty good shade tree mechanic handle it --97 f 150 4x4 -Thanks
s862b is the model of the differential to find the right parts list. The 3 that goes with the 55 is under the bolt holding the tag on. The ratio is 3.55. If there is an L between the 3 and 55 it is a Traction Lock. 88 is the size of the ring gear (8.8 inches). sf27 is build date information.
S862-B = '97-9 F 150, 8.8, 3.55 ratio, non-limited slip.
SF27 does not work as a date code per my decoder ring, as the "S" should be a number, perhaps an "8"???
Rebuild it yourself? You have a lift, or do you like working in the dirt under the truck? Got a dial indicator? Inch-lb torque wrench? Time to do it more than once if you fubar?
I watched a Ford mechanic do an 8" on the bench and decided it's best left to those who've done more than one, if you want it to last and not howl....jmo, ymmv.
My friend has a 03 F-150 5.4 auto 4x4 with 3.55 with non limited slip. the offroad shop near our house has a 07 f-150 5.4 auto 4x4 limited slip rearend unit. now the question is the 07 axle was 9.75 it had 3.73 gears the custemer replaced that with a truetrac and 4.56s. now my friends rear axle is 9.75 are they inter-changeable? will the unit just bolt into the 03? the offroad shop said it would or should. it is just the "pig" does it matter that it had 3.73 and going to be bolted to 3.55s? and will axle shafts going to be the right lengh for the clips? All constuctive input is appreciated. Thanks
