78' F250 with 400 motor all stock. The engine fires up really fast and easy, problem is it idles at the normal low rpms when cold and sometimes wants to die-depending on how cold it is outside. Shouldn't the choke keep the rpms up while it's cold? What can I do to check to see if the choke is functioning correctly? Thanks.
The choke itself doesn't keep the idle up - the fast idle linkage does. The fast idle linkage is engaged and disengaged based on the choke plate position. You can tell if your choke is working very easily by pressing the gas pedal once while the motor is cold, then pulling off the air cleaner and seeing if it's shut. The choke, pulloff, and fast idle mechanisms on a stock Ford 2 barrel are actually pretty complex, and many elements are often overlooked. If your truck starts well when cold but can't idle, it sounds like your fast idle index is off. I have two writeups for you:
