I was on here a lil while back, I have a f250 2001 super duty that i am having problems with. Last post i thought we had it figured out, but apperently not. I switched the hubs to see if the 4x4 would work, and it did work, until i got out and used it. For some reason i cant get the 4x4 to stay engaged. If i get out of my truck and pull the hubs completely out and then reinstall them the 4x4 will work, but after a short time they dissingage? Then i have to get out, pull the hubs and start over, its a real pain in the neck. Last time i went out i used this method, and after the second time, i couldnt get the 4x4 to engage period. I have manuel locking hubs, but there is a switch on dashboard that you turn on to engage. Is this a hub problem? Or is vacume involved? Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated, without my 4x4 i feel naked.
The hubs dont say anything. I have to pull the snap ring off and pull the hubs out individually and re-insert them in order to get 4x4 to work. On my dash i have a selector switch that has 2 wheel, 4 low, and 4 high. the hubs are manual so i have to lock and unlock them.
sounds like someone did a conversion on this one. Truck was designed with auto locking hubs so all you had to do was turn the switch.
So since you are now converted to manual locking hubs it would seem they forgot to mark it on the hub, therefore you are forced to pull them apart to confirm?
Do you have manual hubs? With a way to turn the hub without taking it apart?
Yes the hubs are manual, i can turn them to lock and unlock position. The problem is no matter what i do, i have to pull the hubs completely out in order for the 4x4 to work. Its wierd. Just imagine driving along in 4 high and the 4x4 shuts off on its own, then i have to jump out, pull the hubs out, literally hold them in my hand and then re-insert them. This works once or twice but thats it. Im not sure why its dissengaging on me or anything?
The auto hubs on the Superduty have a **** to turn to manually lock them in case the vacuum system doesn't lock them.
If you turn the ***** clockwise, the 4x4 doesn't work ?
Do this:
Turn the ***** clockwise on the hubs.
Without doing anything else, with the **** in 4x2 (2-wheel drive), get underneath and turn the front driveshaft by hand. See if one or both front axle u-joints turn and report back.
If either one of the front hubs don't lock, you will have no 4-wheel-drive.
Drive it around with the hubs MANUALLY locked, maybe even drive it in 4x4 on dirt, until the 4x4 stops working. Take the transfer case out of 4x4, and try turning the front driveshaft again.
It might be in the transfercase or the shift module(electronics) or the shift motor on the transfercase.
If you do what Krewat says an the hubs are still locked , but don't have 4x4 its back in the transfercase or electronics that controll it.
Crazy things have happened with that system.
