Everyone who has ever gone mudding has said how much better Narrow tires help. I work with a guy who drove a Super Duty 4x4. He commented how badly a little half ton Chebby was beating him in mud. Why? Because the Chebby had narrow tires and the Super Duty had wide tires.
Since you won't believe me, here's something to chew on. Read.
"As mud varies, some tips help to address certain conditions. For instance slick mud with a hard bottom layer is best attacked with a narrow mud tires since a narrow mud terrain tire can cut through the top layer to find traction on the hard surface below. When a wide mud terrain tires encounters the same mud in this situation, it tend to float or "hydroplane" on the slick top layer without reaching the hard surface below. "
i always heard that you run a narrow tire in the front so it cuts better and turning is improved and wide tires in back for traction. just what i have heard though. i run 12.50 all the way around and do just fine.
i have a 95 300 6 with 33's running 3.55 gears with a 5 speed granny low. for my set up, i need alot mor gear cuz 2nd gear wont spin very well in hte mud at a crawl. i would go more so 3.73 with 33's and 4.10;s if its 35's. 4.56 seems like alot for a 300 6, with the power band real low like that. also it would prolly be on the boards for interestate driving. may just be me, but doesnt seem all that logical to run 4.56's

I have to agree with ya here. Everyone seems to think wide tires are better. A buddy of mine runs the skinniest size BFG mud terrains that will fit on a stock rim on his F250, and he NEVER gets stuck. Even with pulling tractors, unless Im pulling on a loosely packed dirt strip, I run stock width tires.

I personally feel M/T's are the best for mudding (obviously). Some guys just run A/T's, but I think those are a waste of time. This is just my thought though.
Wide tires are good for handling, traction and looks. For serious mudding narrow tires are best. There's a truck for sale over here that has tractor tires on it. It's 4x4 but the front tires are much shorter than the rear (the rear are 4 footers I think). The tires are verrry narrow. It's titled "Mud Truck", as in strictly for mudding.
i disagree about narrow tires being best, when you get into really deep mud if you have narrow tires that dig to the bottom you'll just bury your rig up to the axles where as if you had wide tires with good floatation you can stay on top and let the lugs in the tire do the work, and i agree that all terrains suck
have you ever been to a mud bog competition? how many trucks there run skinny tires? with 31s if they are skinny you don't have near the ground clearance to cut into the bottom of the mud hole unless it's just a puddle
the only time i have seen narrow tires work is when the truck us HUGE as in like 5ft tall tires where they do have the clearance to cut down into the bottom of the mud hole
