more fuel line issues

so, after replacing the fuel pump, all fuel lines, filters, and cleaning out the sending unit, we're still having fuel issues. it runs at idle, then after driving it for only a short time, it dies and the fuel filter is emty. it looks like its sucking air into the filter but we dont think theres any holes anywhere in the lines. (again, new lines, rubber and steele) lol

we're pretty sure it needs a new alternator, but, can the two be related somehow?

This thing has us pretty stumped.

When it dies, how easily does it start back up? The next time it happens, pull the air cleaner off and pull the throttle back and see if the carburetor has any fuel in it.

I was also having this problem, the truck would run great when there was fuel in the bowl of the cab, then when it ran out the truck stopped. Make sure your bowls are staying full, check the needle valve and make sure it works properly. To solve my problem i replaced the entire fuel line from the tank to the pump, i used an electric pump, and made sure there was no leaks and also rebuilt the carb. Truck finally runs great now, finally.

we're haveing issues with the charging system, and, the fuel system. installed a new alternator, nothing changed, and I'm replacing the little condenser box tomorow.

also, what are the odds that the lobes on the crank are run down enough that theyre not making enough connections to the pump?

If you have a vent problem, your tank can be full and the line will run dry. The empty fuel filter symptom can be a faulty fuel cap, or faulty vent.

put a gauge on the discharge side of the pump to verify fuel pressure and verify the volume. IF it runs out of gas after a short period of time, then you have to keep looking at the supply.

we've been trying it without the gas cap on, still the same symptoms. we thought maybe it'd be a vent problem so we took the gas cap off and left it off while troubleshooting.

Do you have a loop or a high spot in the fuel line somewhere? If the supply does not flow free, then the pump will starve. The pump should not have to create suction, as it should have a decent supply of fuel at the line.
You will then have to verify the discharge side of the pump to verify that the pump is functioning properly, and the eccentric is functional.

Sure there is, even the chain auto parts stores have them. It will have to be installed in series with the existing line, but a simple 'T' will do the trick. Watch the gauge once you getit running again, and see what changes the pressure goes through as the engine runs. Notice how much time it takes for this problem to occur.

does that go on between the pump and the motor, or between the pump and the tank?

Has to go on the pump discharge side, so this will be between the pump and the carb.
Almost zero pressure before the pump, but should see around 6 psi after it.

Pickup in the fuel tank? Try running it from a fuel can instead of the gas tank.

took the tube off the pickup because it was kinda deteriorated. put on a rubber fuel line to the length of where the float would be on empty. after cleaning out the pickup tube of course. lol
