I plan on changing my serpitine belt in the next few weeks. I just ordered it from a Ford dealer in Minn. (31 bucks ). I happen to have my top hose going thru the belt so i have to disconnect to top part. So i have 2 questions, If i replace it with the type that goes around the belt will I need to drain the coolant out to below the water pump? Im not sure if it will come out from the lower hose connection. But on another note, I want to change the coolant because it is the original and I have 147 k on the truck. So if I buy the gold from ford do they add the additive that i need for my truck or does it come in a seperate container. Or is there a better alternative to use than the gold ford. thanks Jeff
When I changed my upper hose, I drained my radiator down a little bit and then got it out of the hose itself and changed it out!
I wouldve just flushed it out and changed to an ELC back then if I could find any. I now have some and will be flushing and replacing the lower hose this time around as well as switching to the billet tstat housing. The ELC you wont have to touch for at least 300K miles and then after that just add an extender.
I dont think the gold needs an additive but I could be wrong. The green might be the only one that needs it.
If you stick with Gold, you don't need additive. The alternative is something like Rotella ELC, Final Charge ELC, or other Heavy Duty diesel rated ELC. They last MUCH longer (like 300k+) and don't require additives. Just don't use Dex-Cool...
And just to add to what Joe said above, get the one's he mentioned above. I made that mistake and bought Prestone Extended Life Coolant and had to flush everything back out. Its not heavy duty for our trucks, its for cars and LIGHT DUTY trucks. I got the CAT ELC in mine.
Thats what I put in the Ex. ($13/gal, IIRC) F350 has Evans NPG+ (it don't get better than that BTW!!)
I recommend putting a petcock valve on pass-side block drain if you decide to flush coolant. That plug over starter was a PITA for me...
evans npg+ is what i use also, since 75k miles just turned 100k, @ 125k im going to reflush( with their flush) put on new hoses and the billet 203* thermo...
OK, I feel totally stupid now. The EXACT same company I bought the Rotella ELC from sells Chevron Delo. They definitely do not advertise it outside! Im gonna call them and see if they will exchange them out with Chevron!
I prefer the Chevron Delo ELC. 750,000 miles as is, or 1,000,000 miles with an extender.
I have the Delo ELC in my Excursion and I plan on backflushing my F250 this year and filling it with Delo too.

I've converted all my vehicles (1973 Nova SS, Volvo V70XC, Volvo 960, and the truck) to the Delo ELC, We have it in a truck (with Cat engine) at work and it was just tested at 750,000 by Cat dealer and they said it was still within specs.
Its just a 1/4" male pipe thread valve. Just like on bottom of an air compressor or something. The driver's-side would need a nipple or something to clear the block, but that plug is easy enough to get to so I didn't bother..
