Driveshaft rubber boot?

Hey guys,

I looked under my Excursion, and noticed the black rubber boot in the middle of the rear driveshaft was missing. Its the ribbed boot on the driveshaft that I think covers the joint that allows the driveshaft to shorten/expand. It was held in place by 2 hose clamps, both of which are still there. I have no idea what happened to it.

Does anybody have a P/N for that rubber cover or a place to get it? The reason I'm asking in the SD forum is I just went to the dealership who will only sell me the WHOLE driveshaft assembly ($900), which is crazy . I asked in the Excursion forum, and nobody seemed to know, so I figured I'd try you guys. I think the driveshafts are a little different, but hopefully the boots will be similar

Here's the boot I'm talking about

(from https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/...e_Service.html)

Thanks in advance guys!

Check with FTE Parts Guy, here on the forum, he is one of the sponser's. His link is over on the left, in the Ford-Truck Sponcer list. He'll track down the kit number, and his prices are good also. I think the kit has the clamps and boots.

I have used, and have read that a few guys have just used a shock boot for this application. You can just use wire-ty's to hold it in place. Simple and inexpensive.

That makes a lot of sense. You wouldn't happen to have the dimensions of the driveshaft would you? (I'm currently up in Boston, MA for college trying to orchestrate this for my family who have the X in TX, so its hard for me to take a measurement)

Thanks

afreemanmd,

I don't have the measurements but I believe all shock boots are created equal. Also, it most likly won't hurt to run without the boot for a few K as long as the conditions are not too bad (lots of dust or water). If the shock boot needs to be stretched to fit over the slip yoke, lube it whith soapy water; once the wate dries the boot will stay put.

They really had to warm up the boot and stretch it over the shafts. Not to mention that the boot is a lot longer than the one used on the shaft. With that extra play I would think that the shaft spinning would throw the loose middle section to one side as it spun around, possibly making the shaft unbalanced. Maybe I'm just ****, but I would go with a replacement boot vice a shock boot. It's shorter, thicker and what was there in the first place. A shock boot is about $6 from a shop (4 Wheel Parts) and I don't know how much Ford wants for a replacement.

Just my .02

In the end it's your truck and your decision. Anything is better than nothing for keeping out the dirt and grime from the slip yoke.

Ford seems to want $600 for a replacement. You get a free driveshaft with it! I have yet to find a part number for it myself. Dealership just told me that the only option they offered was the whole unit. Shock boot sounds better all the time.

Have you e-mailed Ed at www.FTEPartsGuy.com?siteid=215005?]Th!nk Parts Guy/FTE Parts Guy[/url] If it can be had without the driveshaft, he's the man that can do it (and at the best price around).

Yep, I emailed him, but unfortunately, he couldn't find get just the boot. However, he was the only parts person I talked to who bothered to email ford on my behalf and then get back to me. A+ stand up guy from my experience, I'd buy from him in the future

I've just started calling driveshaft repair places hoping to find an aftermarket replacement, but no luck yet.

Thanks for your help guys

Another option is talk to some local 4x4 shops that do a lot of lifts. Some lift kits re-locate the carrier bearing, but I would imagine that some replace the existing driveshaft. I also know of people replacing their driveshafts with one piece shafts. If you talk to some shops they may have an old driveshaft laying around. If not, you could leave your number with them and they might sell you a boot the next time they take a shaft off of a SD or X...
