I had a similiar problem with my 6 disc cd player.I pulled the unit out of the dash and removed the top cover and took a small screwdriver and moved things around a little bit. Then I hooked it back up and started working again.I'd try that before taking the faceplate off.I bought the tool to remove it from the dash at Walmart for around $5,it only took a few minutes to remove it from the dash and take the 2 screws to take top cover off.
I went thru 2 Stock CD Players, both did the same damn thing. Both were covered under warranty but after the 2nd one I said f it and put a headunit in, along with door speakers amp and subs. No more Problems.

Special tool for it? Was it a micro-screwdriver kit? Exactly what tool did you use so I can get the right one.
