The tongue weight of the trailer adds to the GVWR and axle loadings of the truck but the entire weight does not. The entire weight of the trailer adds to the GCWR.
If someone out there has an owners manual will they please post the GCWR figures?

LAST EDITED ON 09-Aug-01 AT 01:39 PM (EST)[p]No, you have to add the weight (GVW) of both the truck and trailer together to find out if you are under the GCWR for the truck.
You only use the weights of the axles (GAW) to determine if your axles are overloaded. You also use the GAW to determine the total weight of the truck (GVW).
I apologize if I was unclear, I was in a hurry when I typed it out. The GVW of just the truck, minus hitch/pin weight, and the GVW of the trailer are added for toatl truck/trailer weight (GCW) and this must be under GCWR.

It has nothing to do with being underpowered, it has to do with being over weight. By the way most states are cracking down on over weight trailers. Have fun with the fine, if you don't cause an accident first. It just surprises me the lack of respect you have for your safety, your passenger's safety, and the safety of fellow motorists you are showing by knowingly grossly overloading a vehicle.
I personally would rather pay for five years on a new truck that I knew was rated for the job I wanted it to perform. God be with you and the other motorists you share the road with.

Deen,
No question that the rating is low, but that's at least in part because of the 3.08s. Since he's planning on changing his R&P to get more rating, what is the GCVR for an automatic and 3.55s?

Gross combined will never change. GCWR is based on frame, brakes, and trans I believe. There are way too many factors which make this truck extremely unsafe for this job.

StrangeRanger, my manual does not show the GCVR only GCWR and also maximum trailer weight by itself. With a light duty rear end and no tow package it does NOT change the maximum trailer weight ...even 4:10 gearing is a maximum of 2,000 lb. trailer weight.
My manual states: 1. Super cooling is required for trailers over 2,000 lbs.
2. Super cooling and Handling/Suspension Package are required for trailers over
3,500 lbs.
If he meets all the above requirements a 3:55 gear will give a maximum trailer weight of 6,200 lbs. and a GCWR of 10,000 lbs.
If he meets all the above requirements a 4:10 gear will give a maximum trailer weight of 6,900 lbs. and a GCWR if 11,000 lbs.
