Hello guys
I have a 1990 F-350 Diesel 4wd. and the clutch is burnt up in it and i need to change it. Its a 5 speed transmision. It also needs a synchronizer in 2nd gear. Is this something i should attempt to do or should i take it somewhere? I also need to extend the clutch rod. It seems a lot of trucks that are that year model have the problem with the clutch rod being to short.?.? Isnt there a piece you can buy to extend it? Thanks for your help
Also there's a plastic bushing in the rod end under the dash that gets wiped out. As for installing the synchronizer that depends on how good you are with intricate details and a lot of parts.
Thanks for the replys. My uncle put a brand new clutch and pressure plate in it a few years ago. He let someone use it and they burnt the clutch up he said the rod needed to be extended some so i am not sure if it is to short or not. He talked to someone who had the same problem and that guy said he welded a nut on the end of the rod
Under dash the plastic bushing and pin wear can soak up some of the clutch stroke.
Also some master clylinders have adjustable rods, so you can get the pedal to top of stroke on the master cylinder right.
If you do not have an adjustable rod, if the stroke slack is wrong you pull the arm off the clutch pedal shaft to adjust the slack.
Last but not least, check for clutch master cylinder movement by hgaving someone press and release the clutch while you watch the clutch master cylinder.
Not uncommon for the firewall to crack, which let's the master cylinder move away from the pedal and result in not enough stroke from the slave cylinder.
Dave thanks for your response! the main thing i know is the clutch pedal has a lot of play. the only way to get the truck to shift right is to stomp the pedal to the floor. The other stuff you talked about its kinda over my head b.c i have never messed with a clutch or transmission. Do you have any pictures of some of the pieces you are talking about? Or a book. I will try to do some research on the NET also THanks again for you guys help
