Sorry. no vids, but I would like to add Eric Clapton-"Politician" and Walter Becker (Steely Dan)-"Reeling in the Years"
Becker was there, but the actual lead was a session guitarist.
"Reeling in the Years" is very much a typical Steely Dan recording in that it reflects a perfectionist's attention to detail, but it also contains some of their finest guitar work ever to appear on one hit single. Creative phrasing, lightning-fast licks, and perfectly executed hooks weave back and forth between Baxter and hired gun Elliott Randall. Baxter supplies the mellifluously repetitive phrase that sets up Randall to launch into the distorted overdrive of his solos. Baxter was probably every bit as creative as Randall, but song sculptors Becker and Fagen were clever enough to know that Randall's fiery brand of soloing would contrast brilliantly with Baxter's techno-cool approach, yielding six-string kismet in four-and-a-half minutes.
Good stuff, spikedog, I did not know that it wasn't Becker. However, some of the best musicians in the business are studio musicians who are unknown to the general consumer. I would like, at this time, to add Dave Mason-Look at You, Look at me.
Spikedog, I appreciate the lesson in guitar (for lack of a better term). The next time I hear Steely Dan, I'll really listen to the guitar. BTW, does anyone know the history of the name Steely Dan?
I've gotta agree there are a ton of great guitarist mentioned here.
I am a SRV fan from the early days.
But Peeps gotta remember. A lot of the old timers were out there laying down their licks before distorsion pedals, electronic stimulation, etc.
I just got done watching Fernando Miyata - Brazilian Guitarist. The guy is so freakin amazing. The Vids are over 2 years old. Why in the h e l l is there no recordings of this guy for sale???? If He were in a band, He'd be making a killing.
Warren Haynes - anything he plays
Peter Klett (Candlebox) - Far Behind
Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover
Randy Rhodes (R.I.P.) - Bark at the moon
Jeff Healey (R.I.P.) - Blue jean blues (cover)
Mark Knopfler (think it's right but already mentioned) - sultans of swing
John Petrucci (Dream Theatre) - everything he plays
Here ya go. I had no idea he covered that. As far as the blues go, Billy Gibbons has got to be one of the best around. But her is some Jeff Healey. A remarkable guitar man:

Gotta look him up, sounds interesting.
There's alot of soloists that kinda fly 'under the radar'. Guys like Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani (Hey, that's G3 there) escape the popular mainstream. Satch might be rediscovered once the supergroup CHICKENFOOT gets out this summer on tour. Satch, Sammy Hagar, Mike Anthony, and Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers); now that might be verry interesting.

Ya know even more than a solo, which can be planned, and visualized, and overdubed, and retook until it is perfect. In fact it can be transcripted and learned by anyone willing to put in the effort. My big ****** with guitars is tone! You can play an identical guitar and rig as any of your heroes, and almost never come up sounding exact. There are guys that no matter what they are playing on (music or guitar) you canhear them throw a couple of licks and no immediately who it is. Billy Gibbons has an awesome sound. Ah hell we could go on all day listing guitarists, if they create magic for you, you will be able to pick them out easily enough. My favs have always been Ritchie Blackmore, rudolf and michael schenker, mathias jabs(the other scorpions guitarist) George lynch. speaking of George Lynch, i just picked up the latest Dokken disc... the guy filling georges shoes now...... holy cow, i had to read the jacket to make sure it wasnt george. he does a fine job of ripping off georges sound. hahaha!
