ok so i posted this question in supercrew section and now realize there is a dedicated tow section... here it goes
ok,,, i read the info on spec section and i'm still not sure ... what is the "standard" towing capacity of a 2001 4x2 5.4 liter with limited 355 screw without the class 3 package , and is it major work to have class 3 package done after the fact (not counting 1.4 inch rad, since it sounds like it may not be needed... i think????)
You'll have to look in your owners manual for the "standard" towing capacity. Most of Ford's literature lists the maximum towing capacity as "when properly equiped", meaning with the class III package.
Generally, 2,000 pounds is the max trailer weight recommended without a frame mounted hitch. The main component of the class III package is the class III frame mounted hitch and upgraded aux trans cooler. The rest is 7 pin wiring harness, HD shocks and battery.
It would not be 'major' work to have your Ford dealer or RV specialist equip your truck for towing.
thanks for the info i wondered what "properly equiped" meant... i plan on putting in a frame mounted hitch, i hope that alone should handle 4000 pounds... i'll talk to the RV guys.
