Short vs. Long Stem T-Stat?!?!

Does anyone know the physical differences in the short and long stem thermostats?

I bought one from Advance and dont know if its short or long! I dont wanna have to do this all over again because of trial and error!

Thanks!

Yes, the longer stem is slightly longer than the other

I don't have any measurements on the long stem, but happen to have a short stem (wrong one) laying around and a work truck half disassembled. If yours looks like this, don't install it.

I also included a pic of what the wrong one looks like in the housing so you can see why it doesn't work. The right one is in a guys truck right now for him to match it to when he picks up another one. The short stem is what they gave us when we just asked the counter guy.

Im pretty sure that the pic from F350-6 is a long stem. Also the 94-95 are the only ones that used a short stem

Most from parts store are the short shaft.

84-250,

Where did you find that image or is there anyway you can make it larger?!

The one I got from Advance and the one from Autozone are both right at 2 inches long like the one Chris posted. Everyone looked at me like I was crazy saying that was the long stem one but I just kept remembering the 2nd pic Chris posted...
One of the pics below is the 2" "long stem" from the part store and the other one is what they called the "short stem" which was in a 1995 7.3....Im just so confused and really dont want to pay 36 bucks for a 203* tstat...

Yes! I would love to have the length of that 203*! I measured the one I got just like Chris did in his above pic from the flange down and it was right at 2". Just doesnt make sense the big box stores dont sell the right ones....

Thanks!!!!!!!!

With mine laid out exactly like Chris's, mine measures an inch and three quarters, a quarter inch shorter than his.....

We had just replaced the water pump in that truck (and new thermostat with it) before we discovered we had some other issues which is a whole different story, but we ended up pulling things back off, and as you can see, that thermostat does not quite hit the housing to close things off.

Mike & Tristan, when you get around to installing the thermostat, do us a favor and take a measurement from where the flange sits down to the neck. I'll try and remember to do the same with this one tomorrow.

Since we had everything out, I thought it would be a good opportunity to just take the picture of what it looks like from the back side. Looks like I've caused more confusion than I helped. I'll have to see what else I can find out about this since it's got me curious now. I may just bring the housing to the parts store with me and see what does and does not fit.

Sorry guys. I ate some really spicy enchiladas for supper and may have washed them down with one too many cold ones. No excuse for the pics I mislead you with earlier other than being distracted at work and trying to quickly answer a question without thinking. Feel free to call me names later.

The thermostat is not supposed to block off the port on the bottom. The coolant coming through there bypasses the thermostat and returns back to the engine when it's cold. When the engine warms up, the thermostat opens and allows fluid to go through the thermostat and into the radiator. The short stem does not allow the thermostat to open enough, so it looks like 84-250 is correct and that is the picture of a long stem thermostat. That would make me a dumb***. Sorry again for confusing things.
