I have an 85 F250 4x4 6.9 Diesel with 4:10 gears. The C6 has a shift kit I believe. That being said, I hate the "kick" that the shift kit produces, also, with the 4:10 ration --it just needs another gear. So, I was wondering if an E4oD would bolt up/convert easy? or would it be alot of nonsense extra work?
I would say dont do it. I have had nothing but trouble with my E4OD and wouldnt recomend the tranny to ANYBODY. 2 new ford trannies and 3 rebuilds in less than 4 years. All this with less than 10,000 miles on it.

I would say stick with the C6. If you don`t like the shift kit take it out.
You could put a E4OD in but among other things you would need a stand alone controller which I think would set you back around $500.00.
Fonefiddy has an overdrive unit set up for the c6 that would be abetter deal all the way around. The only thing different would be you wouldn't have a lock up converter.
But NO computer needed and if desired you would have 6 gears versus 4 and a lot cheaper.
An E4OD can be built to hold up as well as the best C6s out there, but as I ask all that bring this idea up, how much can you spend on this?
For what I do with my truck, I wouldn't have liked a C6/GV combo, but with 4.10 gears, you will get a nice compromise. You will have a hard time reaching 20 MPG, but you will at least be able to keep up with freeway traffic now.
Truth is its really hard to justify the expense and cost of doing a have decent E4OD conversion (note I didn't say swap, since there is much more to it) unless you rack up a lot of highway miles or you are able to get the parts cheap (but then you may not know what you are getting). I would never use the OEM wiring and controller on a retrofit to an older vehicle. Way too many things to go wrong.
For some one in your situation, its really hard to beat the simplicity and cost of a used auxiliary overdrive.
I just completed the same swap and asked everyone the same questions. I could not be happier. I spent the winter on and off installing the trans and wiring, but far better than a aftermarket controller with no diagnostics. Any specific questions, I can help. The e4od has it's weaknesses, but can be corrected fairly easily.

Actually I am curious. You are the only other guy I ever heard of that did this swap besides me on this vintage of vehicle. What year is your tuck?
Any photos?
FYI, the aftermarket controller I used does have diagnostics, but does not have a limp mode or fault code retrieval like OEM. Instead the computer is interphased with a PC or laptop for programming and tuning.
Still very interested to see how yours turned out.
I spent alot of time questioning the baumann controller, but decided against it because of lack of fault codes. I have a 86 crew cab 1-ton 2wd. My donor was a 1990 E-350. I used some of the original van harness, and fabbed the rest my self. My computer sits in a console between the seats, kinda under the heater ducts. It was already there, so I decided to use it to hide the teca. It could also be mounted around the steering coulm, if a bracket was made. I fabbed a crossmember, and had the driveshaft shortened and ballanced. Also upgraded the truck to 1990-style glow-plug controller and engine monitor lights{filter/ water/glow/overheat}. I will have some picts soon. Oh yeah, I don't mind helping anyone with the swap, but my time on the computer is hit and miss.
My 86' F-350 6.9L w/ C6 is great I get 14mpg, when I'm plowing in the winter I get about 11-12mpg. Problem wise C6 is nearly indestruclable.... Blew a trans line driving down the highway smoking out the back of the truck Turned around and pulled over in a parking lot got a ride to the parts store filled the trans with 10qts... (it is a 12qt trans.!) Never slipped a shift or locked up.. Don't recomend driving a E4OD 2qts low many issues.... My 2 cents.
